OHINEMURI COUNTY.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was submitted to the Ohinemuri Counts’ Council meeting on Thursday last by the engineer, Mr E. Shaw : “A distance of 50-odd chains of Pae-roa-Te Aroha Road was scarified and rolled, which hap greatly improved the running surface. This road is now in fair order. “The roller was removed to Paeroa to have the governors connected, and was then taken along with the stone crushing plant to Kpmata. The plant has now been installed, and a trial was made whereby it was found that the governors did not work satisfactorily, but this trouble has been overcome and crushing will be proceeded with immediately. Before starting it, and if time will permit, I would like the councillors to visit the plant and isee it in operation. I hope to be in a position at the next meeting of the council to state the cost of production per cubic yard of metal. I am of the opinion that it will be possible to place the metal in trucks at the Komata station, to be railed where required, at a cheaper rate than it is possible to get it elsewhere. Of course, if this should develop, an extra motor truck would be required. “A scheme has been prepared and forwarded to the Commissioner of Crown Lands for approval of accrued thirds to March 31 last amounting, to £7O-odd.

“Re Deviation of Rahu Road, Karangahake.—l have received the assurance in writing from the settlers whose property the new road will pass through that they have no objection. I have instructed the surveyor to make the necessary survey, and have the same legalised. The formation is being proceeded with under flood damages.

“The following roads have received attention and have been patched with metal: Tauranga-Waihi, Cadman, Waitawheta, and various roads in Kaimanawa. Waitawheta Road is very bad, and will need a lot of attention before next winter. There is a contract let for metalling portion of th’is road, but owing to the lateness of the season when let it was impossible to carry out the work. Mill Road, Paeroa, was cut up badly by the Public Works Department carting coal during the winter to the dredges, but during the month the resident engineer has had the necessary repairs effected.

“The grader has been employed for a short period rounding up the formation on the top road at Mangaiti. Other soft roads that have received attention are Ngatifangata Road • (access to Leach and others), Hollis’ Road, ana Trig Road, and aliso repairs to bridges, etc., in the Rotokphu Gorge, Old Te Aroha Road.

“Before the steam roller is put on the road again it wlil be necessary to have the wheels retyred, as they have become very thin and portion of the flanges have been broken off.—Agreed to.

“Metalling Hubbard’s Road. —As the metalling of this road is held under contract by Brenan and Cp„ Ltd., it will be necessary to enter into a fresh coil tract with them, as the metal for same can be secured from the crushing plant at Komata.”—Left with the chairman and Crs. Johnstone and Hubbard, with power to act.
