The engineer was granted authority at yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council to engage a working foreman for road formation work. Private letter-box holders at the local post office will be pleased to learn that arrangements have been made to have the private box lobby open <n Sundays between the hours of 9 a in. and 5 p.m. A return tabled at yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council showed that 55 cows, 30 steers, and heifeis, 133 sheep, 4 calves, and 6 pigs were slaughtered at the local abattoirs during last month, the fees totalling £54 5s 3d. The Waihi Borough Council has approved of the erection of tepid baths for the public, and at the present time arrangements are being made to procure suitable wooden pipes for the purpose of conveying hot water from the mine to the baths. “The school committees of New Zealand are the most valuable local body asset we have,” said the Hon. Minister for Education in the House, "and our system of having them is much more valuable than other systems where the whole, control is vested in some central 1 authority.” For Influenza, take Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure.

When discussing the conditions under which a portion of the Beach Reserve was being handed over to the Waihi Borough Council at yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, Cr. P. Corbett moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded the committee appointed to go into the matter, Cr. Johnstone: “Who were the committee ?’’ The Clerk : “The chairman and Cr. P. Corbett.” (Laughter.) At tne last meeting of the Farmers’ Veterinary Club it was decided to write to the Agricultural Department requesting that Messrs Lyons and Patterson visit Ngatea and meet the settlers, who would place before them various matters of interest to the department appertaining to the district. A reply has been received from Mr J. Lyons, Superintendent of the Live Stock Division, stating that he and Mr Pdtteison could visit Ngatea on Wednesday, September 24. The manager (Mr R. Sprague) stated ai. Tuesday’s meeting of the Thames Valley Power Board that sixty-seven houses using heating and lighting were connected during last month, in addition to fifty-six motors. The total number of connected motors on faims was stated to be 973, of which 879 were of 2-h.p. for milking machine purposes. The youngest daughter of Mr J. T. Davies was playing with some other chidren near Bagnall Bros’, store when a toy got behind a crate of corrugated iron. In endeavouring to secure the toy the crate, weighing about scwt. was moved, and it fell on the child. Three men were required to lift it. Pedigree . cattle breeders are reminded that entries for the Thames Valley Jersey Cattle Club’s sale, to be held at Hikutaia on October 16, close with the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co., Hamilton, on Wednesday next, September 10. All breeds of pedigree cattle will.be accepted, and transfer and extended pedigree forms may be obtained from the “Gazette” Office or any member of the club. This sale promisee to be the biggest one of its kind in the district, and it is confidently expected that buyers will be present from all parts of New Zealand, in view of the fact that some of the best strains in the Dominion are to be found among the pedigree cattle of the Thames Valley. Something unique is offered in this week s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review.” The centre pages are strikingly arranged with photographs of nearly 30 well-known followers on their various mounts at the Pakuranga Hunt’s recent meets, and typical scenes in the hunting field are given by Richard Self. Some leading North Island packs also give colour to the hunt, while numerous individual pictures of masters, hunters, and jumps and incidents of early hunting days make up an incomparable issue. The miscellaneous section aiso carries a general appeal, and compr’ses the Rqapehu Ski Club s sports, the Masterton Amateur Operatic Society’s production of “The Gondoliers,” and the customary stage and motion picture portraits.
