FLAX GROWING.

CULTIVATION ON PEAT LAND. PRACTICAL RESULT ON PLAINS. The views expressed by Mr A. Seifert, president of the New Zealand Flaxmillers’ Association, anent the cultivation of flax on peat lands, were referred to Mr Pateman, the Torehape millet on Monday. Mr Seifert had expressed the opinion that efforts to cultivate flax on’peat lands would be in the nature of an experiment, as the Munawatu district experience had proved that it required good rich soil. Mr Seifret had also stated that it had not yet been proved that where there was a big depth of peat flax could be grown. Mr Pateman remarked that Mr Seifcit was speaking only from M.an'awatu experience. Near Torehape, where the peat ranged from 28ft to 32ft in depth, up to forty tons of flax had been cut. This could be proved by the books at the Torehape mill, and seemed a complete answer to Mr Seifert’s doubts.
