BOWLING.
THE PAEROA CLUB. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Paeroa Bowling Club was held in the Soldiers’ Club on Saturday evening, the president, Mr W. T. Power, presiding over some forty-five members. On behalf of the club the president extended a hearty welcome to Mr W. Forrest, a foundation member, and an ex-president of the club. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The balance-sheet disclosed an excess of assets over liabilities amounting to £44 14s Bd. The annual report was read as follows : ANNUAL REPORT. “In presenting the twentieth annual report your Committee has pleasure in stating that the Club has enjoyed a prosperous year, in which the members have loyally supported the Committee, the good fellowship existing throughout the year marking it as one of the most enjoyable seasons in the history of the club. "Official Openings—The green was officially opened on October 13, when the president, assisted by Mrs Power, ably performed his duties in entertaining visitors from surrounding clubs, the whole green being occupied.
“The Green. —Your Committee in January last represented to the Domain Board the necessity of top-dress-ing the green during the off-season, and in July again drew attention to the fact that this had not been done. The reason given by the board for the delay was the exceptionally wet season, and early this month the topdressing was put on, as a result of which it is to be hoped that the green will be in good order for the coming season.
“Membership.—The year opened with 52 members .and at the close of the year we have 57 financial members.
“Resignations.—AVe regret to have to record the loss pf several members by resignation, among them being Mr M. J. Harris, a past president, and Mr A. J. Garry, a past vice-president of the club. Both of these gentlemen were given farewell tokens of the club's esteem and regard. “Fii ancial. —Mainly owing to the practice—decided upon at the last annual meeting—of a 6d levy for refreshments on each Saturday afternoon when visitors were not present, and to the percentage of takings for night play receipts, the club’s finances have been in a much more healthy state than in the previous year. The balance-sheet will show that the accounts owing at the beginning of the season and all present liaibiities have been paid, and a credit balance of £lO 14s 2d remains. "Inter-Club Matches. —Six interclub matches were played during the season with ‘ Waihi, Coromandel, Hikutaia, and Te Aroha clubs, of which four were won and two lost. These friendly games with sister clubs are very popular with members, the opportunity to enjoy the renewal of old friendships and the making of new ones being much appreciated by all privileged to participate in them. “Clothier Shield and Goldfields Stars. —This tournament, held on Laboui Day in Te Aroha, was a very enjoyable .one, and the final was fought out between Te Aroha and Paeroa, the Te Aroha team proving the winners. According to’ the revised rules governing this competition the location of the tournament during the coming season will be the Paeroa green. The Goldfields Stars match against Waihi was won oy Paeroa. After retaining the Stars in the match against Hikutaia the Paeroa team was defeated by Waikino.
“Night Play.—The special committee appointed at last annual meeting to consider the lighting of the green for night play, after consideration of the wliole matter, was authorised to discuss the question with the Borough Council, with the result that the Council undertook to instal the requisite lights, the club to collect the fees and retain 25 per cent, of the takings. The green was officially opened for night play on November 24 last, and opportunity- was thus given for many players new to the delights of bowling to be initiated into the ‘good old game.’ One of the inter-club matches, that against To Aroha, wats played at night, and proved a very pleasant evening for all. The takings for night play show that the expenditure was amply justified, and if the play during the coming seasoi is properly organised the greater part of the capital expenditure should be repaid by the end of the season. In this connection it may be mentioned that the club undertook that the cost of installation would be repaid before November, 1938. The club donated a set of challenge buttons for competition at evening play, and a good many interesting and keenly contested games were enjoyed by players and onlookers. "Club Competitions—The Brenan Memoiial Shield competition, played in sections, resulted in a final being played betwven Thwaites, Ellis, Turner, Power' (skip) and 'Morland, McCullay, Olsen, Towers (skip), the latter team being successful in having their names engraved on the shield as the winners for the season. “Championship.—The winner of this was Mr W. J. Towers, who is to be congratulated on a very successful year’s bowling. “B Grade Championship.—The winner of this competition was Mr L. Gibb, who is to be congratulated on his success. “Fiist Year Players.—The trophy for this competitipn was kindly presented by Mr A. J. Garry, and was won by Mr W. McCullay, who showed good promise as a bowler. ‘Handicap Pairs.—The trophies for this were provided by Mr J. Pinder, and it is a matter for regret that the competition was not completed. Various pairs tournaments were held at different times throughout the season, and were much enjoyed by those taking part. “Thanks.—The thanks of the club are dne to your popular president, Mr W. Power, who ably conducted the affairs of the club and donated the Club Championship trophy; to Mr J. Pin-
der, who donated trophies for Pairs Competitipn; to Mr A. J. Garry for the First Year Players’ trophy. Thanks are also due to the vice-presP-* dents. Messrs Brown and Edwards, v for their untiring efforts in furthering the interests of the club; also to the selectors, Messrs Well?, de Castro, and Brown; to the caretaker, Mr Hamilton, to the green committee, and more especially to the ladies, who so kindly assisted the members in entertaining visitors at the club’s functions. “Your Committee desires to record its appreciation of the efforts of the Domain Board in assisting the club by the prompt installation of the lights for night play, and in endeavouring to meet the wishes of the bowlers. § “Your Committee once again wishes to express its hearty appreciation to the local Press for the valuable assist- ■ ance readily given in furthering the U interests of the club. “Obituary.—Your Committee desires to express its deep regret at the loss sustained by the death of Mr W. Grant, one of its oldest members, and to convey .to his relatives its heartfelt sympathy with them in their bereavement. “In conclusion, your Committee trusts that the members thoroughly enjoyed the last season, and hopes that the coming one will mark a further step in the progress of the club, and that all present members and many new ones will soon, gather together to enjoy many pleasant hours during the coming season. It extends to the incoming officers its best wishes foi a happy and prosperous year of office, trusting that all members will give them the whole-hear.ted support that has been given to the present officeis.” In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet Mr W. H. Taylor congratulated the president and committee on the satisfactory state of the club’s finances. Mr W. Towers agreed that the report and financial statement was an excellent one, with the exception that the report made no reference to the the report made no reference to the untiring efforts of Mr G. H. Taylor, ■secretary, to whom the lion’s share of-v the work throughout the season had A fallen, and under whose careful guid- > ance the club had reached the happy stage that it was in to commence the season. A special vote of thanks to Mr Taylor was carried with acclamation. BOWLING PAVILION. Mr Forrest pointed out that the bowling pavilion had not been included in the balance-sheet as a club asset, and contended that it should have been. Mr de Castro said that although the pavilion had been built by the individuiii efforts and finance of the members, the building was claimed by the Domain Board as Its property. Mr Towers said that the pavilion could only be regarded as a moral as- ~ set to the club, but no action in the matter could be taken. NEW MEMBERS. j, Messrs F. Marsh, Walter Smith, R. W. Medhurst, J. Crosby, W. Lennon, and D McMillan were elected members. RESIGNATION. $ The resignation of Mr N. C. Busby was accepted with regret, and it was decided to record the club’s appreciation of the services rendered by Mr Busby. ALTERATION OF RULES. After a lengthy, discussion it was decided to alter rule 7 to read : “That the management and business of the club shali be controlled by the patron, president, vice-presidents, secretary and treasurer, and three other members of the club, four to form a quorum.” It ./as agreed that the .secretary should receive an honorarium of £5 5s a season and a remission of playing fees. COMPETITIONS. It was decided that competitions similar to last season be played again this season. ’ A long discussion took place with reference to the selection of players and numbers of section in the Brenau Memoiial Shield competition, and it was finally decided that the selectors arrage fixed fours, and that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee that the competition be played in oue section. It was decided that a letter expressing the sympathy of the club with him on his long illness be sent to Captain H. Peacock. The retiring president thanked the members for the loyal support accorded him during his term of office, and expressed the hope that the incoming officers would also experience an enjoyable term.
