DOMAIN BOARD.
——♦ —-—- LAST THURSDAY’S MEETING. Following the Paeroa Borough Council Meeting on Thursday evening last the Domain Board sat, Mr W. Marshall presiding. NEW TENNIS CLUB. A letter was received from the Methodist Church stating that a new tennis club was being formed and applying lor the hire of one .of the courts at present under the control of the board. tn answer to Mr Flatt the chairman said that the club would be open to only members of the Methodist Church. Mr Silcock considered that it was desirable to have the court in use, and moved that the request be granted' at a rental of £8 a year, the Methodist Club to have exclusive right to the court on four days a week. Seconded by Mr Flatt and carried. DOMAIN IMPROVEMENTS. The sub-committee appointed to go into the matter of proposed improvements submitted a lengthy report. Provision was made for fencing, painting of pavilions, tarring of footpaths, erection of seating accommodation in the sports ground, and the erection of and improvements to entrance gates, and other works. Authorilv was given to put the playing areas in proper • order, and for the work to be commenced forthwith. The following recommendations were submitted: SPORTS PADDOCK. The open drain to be piped with 9in pipes and filled in with clay or other suitable material, earth on top. Approximately 250 yards of filling will be required. The area north of the open drain, four acres, to be ploughed, levelled, and g-assed, including the north-east corner, which is used as a dump and is in a very bad state. Tire area south of the drain, 3% acres, to be top-dressed with soil, sand, and manure, and all depressions to be filled in with soil, well rolled, and sown in, grass. This would take about 100 yards of filling. We do not consider this portion of the paddock needs ploughing, and it is already well tiled. In places there are only a few inches of earth on top of clay filling, and if ploughed and levelled with scoop more earth will then have to be carted on to- the field to cover the clay surface which would !»• showing in many places. Therefore, after a good deal of consideration, we arc of the opinion that it would be better, and probably less expensive, to have soil carted in and bring the low levels up to the high levels. . In view of the annual show arid summer sports bodies’ requirements we consider the suggested improvements most urgent, and recoinmend that, contracts for this work be called for at once ; also, to expedite matters they could be let in three separate contracts. When completed there will be ample space in the sports field for two football fields, hockey and .basketball field, etc. The other improvements outlined in the report were deferred until the next meeting, with the exception of tarring and sanding the footpaths leadin,, from the Arney Street entrance to the bowling and croquet greem and tennis courts, which work was authorised to be done as weather permitted.
