NGATEA HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. rhe monthly meeting of the Ngatea Disuict High School Committee was held on Monday evening, Mr W. McDuft presiding over Messrs W. J. Clare, C. W. Schultz, W. Clark, and the Rev. E. H. Brooker (secretary). The headmaster, Mr N. J. Crabbe, in liis monthly report stated that the roll numbers were : Primary department, 127 ; secondary, 13. The average attendances,' respectively, were 107.17 and 11.84. During July the at- 1 tendance was low, but during the two weeks it had totalled 127.5. In regard to evening classes, he had received a letter from Mr Kalaugher saying that the board would not sanction the establishment of evening classes at the smaller country centres because the attendance was generally so unsatisfactory. The headmaster expressed the hope that the girls’ playground would be levelled in time to be used this year. Mr Phillips, of Ngatea, had donated two oak trees and seven ornamental shrubs, and Mr T. McClean about thirty eucalyptus trees, all of which had been planted and seemed to be doing well. It was decided to purchase 100 more trees and to organise a working bee on Saturday next to do certain work in the schoplground, the ladies to be asked to provide luncheon. It was decided to have the typewriter recently donated by Mr E. Walton fo' use in the secondary department sent to Auckland - for repair, and that the Education Board be approached in regard to the teaching of typewriting in school hours. The secretary was instructed to write to Messrs Phillips, McClean, and Walton conveying to them the committee’s thanks for the donations. The chairman reported that the headmaster intended making a can-' vaiss of the district during the holidays to secure pupils for the secondary department, and it was decided to write to the Patetonga School Committee seeking its co-operation in the matte.;.
