N.Z. EGGS IN LONDON.
SUCCESS OF TRIAL SHIPMENTS. WHOLE MARKET AVAILABLE. "1 noticed a wonderful growth of popular feeling in England in favoUr of New Zealand produce,” said Mr J. B. Morrett, who arrived by the Coriuthic irom England this v.eek. Mr Merrett went to England to supervise trial shipments of New Zealand eggs and to establish if possible a regular market in London for this product. “There ip no limit,” he said, “to our possibilities in regard to eggs on tlie London market. I noticed a tremendous change in favour of New Zealand produce, yet 1 was astonished at the absolute ignorance of so many people in regard to the affinity of England and the Dominions. People who became informed of the extent and resources of the Dominions expressed both astonishment and gratification. They only need education jegarding our products tp willingly accept all the stuff we can isend them. “The amuont of deterioration in our eggs'in cool storage on the way Home was negligible. Several large buyers asked me to give them preference in future shipments. One buyer, a restaurant keeper, used all he could get, 2000, in a couple of hours. No less than thirteen million pounds’ worth of eggs are imported into England every year from 42 countries. We could get almost the whole market if we could supply the goods.”
Over 1,000,000 eggs went home in the trial shipments, and Mr Merrett says that the chief factor in the success of the experiment was the grading, which more than compensated for the slight deterioration in quality suffered on the long voyage. This deterioration was confined only to slight evaporation. In some instances New Zealand eggs brought front a penny to twopence a dozen more than English eggs a week old.
