ANOTHER BURGLARY.
A SECOND OUTFITTER’S ENTERED NO SERIOUS LOSS REPORTED. A further burglary was perpetrated during the early hours of yesterday morning, when the premises of Mr D. McWatters, clothier and men’s outtitter, in Belmont Road, Paeroa, were entered. Similar methods to those adopted in the burglary at Mr Slyfleld’s premises were carried out. It appears that an entry was gained by breaking a pane of glass in one of the windows at the rear of the building, enabling the catch to be unlocked and the window to oe thrown open. The windows in the rear of the premises are some distance from the ground, and to enable the catch to be reached a large packing case was placed against the wall. Once inside the building the unwelcome visitor found himself in the fitting room, with a locked door to negotiate before he could reach the shop proper. The wall, dividing the fitting-room from the shop does not ascend quite to the ceiling, so the difficulty of getting into the shop was overcome. The packing case was evidently brought into use again, a,s Mr McWatters found it lying in the room against the wall, indicating that it had been used to climb the wall on the inside of the room. This accomplished, it was an easy matter to climb down the fixtures fcito the shop.
So far as Mr McWatters can ascertain, a travelling rug appears to be all that is missing, but it is a difficult matter to state definitely if more articles have been taken without a complete stocktaking, which is a lengthy and laborious undertaking. Nothing was apparently disturbed in the shop, and only the broken glass in the ffitiiig room and muddy footmarks about the premises gave any indication that anything was amiss. The forced entry may be considered a daring oiie, in view of the fact that a number of residences are in close proximity to the rear ot the premises, and also that there was a full* moon. The police have the matter in hand.
