FOOTBALL.
SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The second round of the club football competition on the Plains opened on Saturday last in good, weather. KEREPEEHI V. TURUA. This match was played at Kerepeehi, and resulted in. a well deserved win for the home team. The Kerepeehi seniors have made great improvement since the beginning of tlie season, and show signs of becoming the leading team on the Plains. The Turua fifteen started tlie season with two wins, then had two draws, and now' two tad losses. The Kerepeehi field cannot be called a good one. One goal is in a hollow, and there is a depression near the. centre of the field which on Saturday was very muddy, and most of the play was there. The game was fast and willing, both teams throwing the ball about well. Kerepeehi had the weight and better combination, and eventually mastered the visitors. The teams were : Turua.—D. Fox, G. Gray, K. Fox; A. Haze, H. Elvin, G. Elvin, E. Clark, C. Bedford, H. Hill, L. Pentecost, W. Clark, G. McCowatt, B. Hutchinson, W. Bell, W. Hearn. Kerepeehi.—J. Adlum, W.' Murphy, Te Hawira, Watene, G. Masters, T. Majury E. Masters, W. Molloy, R. Steedman, T. Rapana, R. Nathan, N. Tipa, H. Baggs, T. Renata, J. Neeves. Turua won the toss, and from the kick-off play went up and down the field. Clark failed to Score, from .. free kick. Tight play on Kerepeehi’s line was relieved by Molloy. After a .struggle in the mud Turua broke through, compelling Masters to force. Play went back to the mud until -Molloy opened up and sent to Turuas quarter, where D. Fox got in some good work. ' G. Gray eventually relieved to halfway, where hard close play ensued until the change over.' Practically the whole of the second round was a hard struggle '■in midfield. G. Masters'with a long kick took play to Turua’s line, but after a five-yards scrum the ball was returned to. midfield. A long kick by Molloy was forced by D. Fox, and on anothei 1 occasion Kerepeehi sent out in touch. G. Masters also- failed to score with a penalty kick. Steedman was ordered off the field for swearing. ... Turua opened up .the third quarter with a strong attack, but Masters saved on several occasions and Ra- : paua finally relieved to midfield. After some close play Nathan secured and reached the line; before transferring to Watene,.who scored. Molloy failed to convert, Kerepeehi 3, Turua 0. From the kick-out Watene secured and invaded Turua’s territory, Murphy then carrying oil to the line, where tight-play ensued. Turua eventually sent to .midfield, only to be attacked again, D. Fox savins this time. Turua received from a line-out and McCowatt led the forwards into the home team’s quarter, but Molloy quickly changed the scene of operations to the other, end of the field. From the throw-in the Kerepeehi backs obtained possession and the ball went out to Watene, who scored after making a good run. Molloy again failed to convert. Kerepeehi 6, Turua 0. The final round opened with play in neutral territory until the commination and training of the Kerepeehi played gained for them the advantage and Turua forced. The dropout was returned and forced. The pressure was immediately resumed, and Turua had hard work defending. After several five-yards scrums Molloy crossed the line but failed to add the minor points. Kerepeehi 9, Turua 0. Molloy again crossed the line, but was forced out in touch. With only a few minutes to go Murphy scored near the corner, and this time Molloy converted from a very difficult position, making the final scores, Kerepeehi 14, Turua 0. Mr J. Banks was referee. The junior game was a hard, even struggle from start to finish, both teams playing good football. L. McCoid scored a try in the first few minutes of the game for Turua. This was the only score. “Mr M, Leonard was referee.
WAITAKARURU V. NGATEA. This match was played at Ngatea, and proved a poor exhibition of football. The Waitakarur.u team was much superior to the home fifteen whose play showed little, if any, improvement on that of the previous Saturday. It a very strenuous game, ranging up and down the- field, and at times was 'very rough. The visiting backs were much superior to those of the home team, though the Ngatea forwards held their own. Though penalised many times Waitakaruru won by 13 points to 0. Two tries were scored by C. Stretton and one by W. Parata, and C. Clark and C. Stretton converted one each. C. Though some of the Coast backs were only juhiors they managed to clear every time West looked dangerous. Early in the second quarter P. Clark had his elbow dislocated, his place being filled by Donald Dalgety. At half-time there was no score, but early in the next round West pressed hard and Foote scored. The try was not converted.
