PAEROA AS A CENTRE.

RECOGNISED BY ARMSTRONG CO. TO BE USED IN ARAPUNI SCHEME. The importance of Paeroa as a natural distributing centre, which fact is much increased by the value pf our river navigation, has been recognised by no less a personage than Colonel Greenhough, New Zealand manager for Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., Ltd., the English contractors whose tender for the Arapuni hydroelectric works has recently been accepted. In the course of an interview with Colonel Greenhough reference, was made to the transport of the huge machinery from overseas to its final position at Arapuni. Colonel Greenhough stated, inter alia, that the electric units would be brought to this country in pieces ranging up to 30 tons m weight and of dimensions which would be too large to pass through the railway tunnels between Auckland and Putaruru. It was proposed to tranship the machinery from steamers in Auckland into barges, which will be brought to the Paeroa wharf, .where special equipment will be erected to handle the machinery. Special waggons will be used to transport the pieces from the wharf at the Puke to the railway station, and there are to be further handling appliances erected at the station to load the machinery on to specially constructed trucks for transhipment to Putararu.
