THE PALMERO SHOW.

CHALLENGE TO THE ARGENTINE. N.Z. STOCK PARTICIPATING. A shipment of New Zealand cattle and sheep, destined tor the International Show at Palermo, Buenos Aires, opening on Setpember 1, were taken from Wellington on Friday by the Mahia, states the Dominion. The ani mals are of sample quality, and therefore cannot be expected to carry oft the prizes that would certainly go to the pick of the Dominion herds and flocks, but they are of a quality that is expected to meet recognition at the hands pf the judges. A representative who visited the Mahia found the animals in comfortable quarters, and they should stand the trip well. For many years breeders o£ the Dominion have been anxious to send a representative collection of stock to their best market, but it haa not hitherto been possible, though single instances of New Zealand-bred stock having won prizes at Argentine exhibitions are on record. The scheme originated with Sir Herbert Gibson, of the firm of Gibson Bros., Calle San Martin. Buenos Aires, a stock firm similar to those in this country, who requested Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co to collect and send across an exhibit that would certainly lead tp further trade. The trade already is not inconsiderable, as much as £35,000 worth of stock having gone in a single shipment, and shipments on smaller lines having been frequent. The selection has been confined chiefly to what may be termed New Zealand breeds of sheep, such as Corriedale, Romney Marsh, Merinos, and Lincolns. The sending of a commissioner, in the person of Mr C. E. Robertson. wil) enable a fuller knowledge to be obtained of the requirements of the Argentine, and it is hoped also to be able to do something to lessen freights and to have stock landed direct a' Buenos Aires in the future, thus avoiding the expense and delays of the transhipment from Monte Video as at present. With the knowledge that the Argentine beef cattle are immeasurably super, lor to New Zealand’s, the cattle have been restricted to dairy breeds, of which the Argentine, now only seriously commencing the dairy industry. is in need. Amongst these are Friesians and Jerseys that will be favourably commented upon. As regards .the sheep, the breeders’ names speak for themselves. Some difficulty has been experienced in getting large hoggets, as these are at their best in November and December here, but the exhibits are mostly confined to rams, and the quality will do the breeders credit
