FOOTBALL.
MATCHES ON THE PLAINS. KEREPEEHI x V. UNITED COAST. This game was played at Kopuarahi on a Held behind the old stere. There was a fair attendance of spectators. Owing to the late arrival of the home team play did not commence to time, and the quarters were only of fifteen minutes’ duration. The teams lined out as follows : — Kerepeehi.—J. Adlum, W. Murphy, Hawera, S. Reti, W. Molloy, G. Masters, E.. Masters, T. Majury, Hurikino, Parata, Moore, Nathan, P. Beti, Renata, R. Steedman. Coast. —T. Hooper, H. Wallis, C. McMillan, A. White, L. James, H. Baigent, E. Ryan and F. Wallis (rovers), S. Dalgety, Jepson, B. Wallis, E. Gill, D. Dalgety, W, O’Neil, L. Peckham. Kerepeehi kicked off facing the sun, and play was in mid-field until Molloy with a long kick sent the ball over the dead-ball line. Kerepeehi had the advantage in several scrums and worked play well into Coast’s territory, Hooper saving. Play then went to the other end of the field and Masters forced. Fast play was then indulged in up and down the field until Coast had a penalty kick within Kerepeehi’s twenty-five. Wallis, however, failed to score and Kerepeehi forced. The second spell opened with play inside Coast’s twentyfive line until a free- kick relieved and shifted the scene of operations into neutral territory. Finally Coas’t attacked and Wallis sent over the line and Ryan scored. Wallis failed to convert. Coast 3, Kerepeehi 0. Coast remained on the attack until Masters relieved. The Kerepeehi pack followed up, a force resulting. The drop-out was returned, and from the loose S. Reti scored. Molloy’s kick failed, and half-time was called with the scores, : Coast 3, Kerepeehi 3. - On resuming-Kerepeehi pressed hard, and after a line-out near the ; corner Hopper forced. Play remained •in Coast’s territoy, and the ball was again forced. Finally D. Dalgety opened the play with a long kick and Coast attacked, compelling Kerepeehi :to force. The drop-out was returned ■ and forced. For obstruction Kere- • peehi suffered a penalty, but the ball i did net rise and defenders forced. {The visiting pack dribbled the ball ! up the field, Hooper saving by kickj ijng over the dead-ball line. The drop- | out was returned and forced. Ryan ■ made an opening and play was shifted !to Kerepeehi’s quarter, change over I being then called. ■ In the final round play ranged up j and down the field, and there were [many free kicks until one found the i line near Coast’s corner flag. A hard i struggle then took place until, from a [five-yards ,scrum Kerepeehi got over, [ Molloy scoring. He failed to convert. [Kerepeehi 6, Coast 3. Play was in j mid-field at the call of time. i Mr J. Kidd was referee. i The Kerepeehi juniors did not play, ias the Coast club had played many iof its juniors in the senior team. | NGATEA V. PATETONGA. I This match was played at Patei tonga, but for many reasons, chief ; among which was the absence of a [ball, the match did not start until • after 4 o’clock, and half the match [was played in semi-darkness. [ Soon after the .start West had Ngat tea in difficulties, and by good play [crossed the-line, but failed to convert. [West 3, Ngatea 0. Play then ranged [up and down the field, the home team [having the advantage of the heavier [pack. Good play by the Ngatea backs [took the ball to West’s territory, !where the defenders were penalised. [Lipscombe took the kick and registered a fine goal. West 3, Ngatea 3. ; In the second spell West had the i advantage, but good saving by Nicoll ! and- Wilton again brought play down 'the field. In the semi-darkness it was not possible to discern what was happening. However, no further scores were registered. Mr M. Leonard was referee. The junior game was just a mud scramble and resulted in a win for Ngatea by six points to three. Mr J. Henry was referee. TURUA V. WAITAKARURU. Another, drawn game resulted when Waitakaruru met Turua at Turua. This field was exceptionally bad, but it was decided to play, and the teams took the field as follows:— Waitakaruru. —C. Clark, Walker, Ryan, Archer, C. Stretton, F. Stret;ton, A. Hamilton, McPherson, R. Slack, B. Williams, E. Laing, Parata, Hunt, P. Williams, L. Berney. ; Turua.-r-L. McCoid, H. Robinson, [Frisken, Hayes, L. Clotworthy, H. Elvin, G. Elvin, J. Thrupp, Tynan, D. Clotworthy, G. McCowatt, W. Clark, •D. Hill, L. Pentecost, Smith. , lyi.the first quarter, when play was in Waitakaruru’s territory, the bad went to Hayes, who scored almost unopposed. In the second quarter Waitakaruru pressed hard and eventually scored and unconverted try. After half-time play was more even, each ■side . attacking and defending alternatively, Waitakaruru made, a determined effort in the last round, and hard play, ensued right on Turua’s line until a force relieved. Play ended in mid-field. Mr J. N. Anderson was referee. The Waitakaruru junior team was only thirteen strong, and was defeated by nine points to nil.
