o . KOI’UARAHI. SOCIAL EVENING. To raise fuuds to augment the donations made by the settlers of the district for the purpose of. purchasing a piano for tlie school, and alsp to celebrate the opening of the new school building, a progressive euchre tournament and dance was held in the .school on Friday evening. The attendance numbered about eighty. The early part of the evening was devoted to card-playing, and after supper dancing commenced and was carried on to an early hour. The euchre prizes wei;e won by Miss Lee and Mr C. R. Briggs, while Mrs H. Green and Mr J. Wilkins were granted “booby" prizes. The school building comprises two large rooms and a porch. Wheni the design of the school became known the ladies of the district, by means of an energetic canvass, collected .sufficient to have large folding doors fitted between the two clossrooms .-b that the building could be better utilised for social functions. Electric lighting has been installed. There was ample floor space on Friday evening for thirty-six couples. Music was supplied by an amateur jazz band, comprising Messrs C. Lawrence (accordion), F. Pearce (violin), T. Gill (drums), and C. McMillan (bottles). KEREPEEHI. CHURCH OF ENGLAND SOCIAL. A ‘ hard-up 1 ’ social, organised by members of the Church of England Committee, was held in the Kerepeehi Hall on Friday evening. The attendance was about sixty, and the majority were in “hard-up" costumes. Rags and patches predominated., though many of the ladies wore neat costumes of hessian or odd shoes and stockings. Some were bare-legged The “hard-upfulness” of the men was signified by the working clothes, football jerseys, or rags they wore. All who wore a collar and tie were finedSongs were rendered between the dancs by Mr H. Booth, Mr P. Newdick, Mrs. Kidd, and the Misses Thompson. Wi‘h Mrs Mules, of Turua, at the piano and Mr G. Masters as M.C. the function was kept going gaily, and a very pleasant evening was spent.
