INTER-UNION COMPETITION. WAIHI 11, V. PLAINS 3. The Hauraki Plains representatives .journeyed to Waihi on Saturday last anil played another game in the Frank Poland Memorial Cup competition. The field was in splendid order, and there was no wind, but the game was not a good exhibition of football. Waihi had a strong team, but the Plains fifteen was very weak owing to the absence of several of the best players. McGuire ami Clotworthy ■shaped well, but Nicoll and Molloy were off their game. Among the forwards the Cowdrey brothers and Lipscombe were the pick. Taking the game as a whole the score was a fair indication of the merits of the teams. The teams were as follows :— Plains. —Full-back, R. McGuire ; three-quarters, C. Molloy, L. Clotwoi'thy, J. Adlum ; five-eighths, CStretton, F. Nicoll ; half-back, L. Masters ; rover, C. Ellis ; forwards, L. Hunt, E. Cowdrey, D. Dalgety, W. Elvin, Lipscombe, Httrikino, D. Cowdrey.
Waihi.—Full-back, C. Dellamorc; three-quarters, G. Price, Pollard, WMcDermott; five-eighths, E. Mooney, R. Williams ; 'half-back, E. Verrail; rover, E. McLeay ; forwards, F. Johnson. T. Mannix, Peacock, J. Talbot, T. Agaew, Fugill, L. Thomas. Waihi followed up the k,iek-off and took play to Plains’ line, a force resulting. From the drop-out Waihi had a. penalty kick, but failed to score. After an interchange ofl kicks play was in neutral territory until V’a.ihi brokea way and entered the visitors’ twenty-five. From a following line-out Williams scored. Dellamorc converted, making Waihi 5 to Plains 0. After the kick-out Plains rushed, but Waihi eased by marking. By following up the kick they broke through the Plains forwards, but McGuire saved. Waihi returned to the attack, and a stiff struggle’ensued in neutral territory. Ellis broke away on one occasion but lacked support. Molloy saved from a tight corner, but the relief was, only temporary. and Waihi kept up the pressure for the remainder of the quarter. After the change-over Plains livened up, but play remained in midfield. From a line-out at halfway Williams secured, and after a, splendid run he passed to Pollard, who carried on and scored. The kick failed. Waihi 8, Plains b. An interchange of kicks followed the kick-out until Nicoll cleared in Waihi’s twenty-five, but the Waihi forwards carried play back to the other end of the field. Following a long kick by Ellis Dellamorc forced. • The drop-out was returned, and an interchange of kicks followed until the Waihi backs made a good passing run and carried play to the visitors’ line, where a free kick relieved. Plains followed up, and eventually got to Waihi’s quarter. McGuire marked in a good position, but a man in front necessitated a sciiiim, from which Waihi benefited and Verrall carried play to Plains’ twentjlive, where open play remained until half time. On resuming, play went to Plaint,’ territory, from where Waihi failed with a free kick. From the drop-out Waihi. rushed, but Plains gradually worked up the field and ittifo their opponents’ territory, where a penalty was awarded the attackers. They failed to score and tight play eventuated. A kicking bout terminated in Dellamorc clearing in Plains’ territory. Line play followed until Dalgety found an opening and carried to the other twenty-five, where clo,se play was indulged in. Action began to get faster, and more willing. Pollard got possession and punted, and by following up he again jgecured and scored. The kick by Verrall failed. Waihi 11, Plains 0.. Close play followed, in midfield from the kick-out. An attack by Plains was quickly turned by Mooney into an attack by Waihi, but play was in neutral territory at chanige-over. Plains opened the final round with an attack, and several scrums eventuated in Waihi’s territory until Verrall relieved. After a kicking bout in the home team’s quarter Mooney made another good run and reached Plains’ corner. The defenders gained the advantage in the line-out and returned play to midfield. Waihi again attacked and had a penalty kick,, at goal, but failed to score. The dropout was returned, and after close play McLeay dribbled to the visitors’ line, a force resulting. Midfield play terminated with a long kick by Hunt, Waihi forcing. A passing rush by Plains was successful, Hurikino scoring, but Adlum failed with the kick. Waihi 11, Plains 3. Play then went to Plains’ territory, but a rush by the defending forwards carried the ball to the home team’s twenty-five. Up and down play then ensued. A fine passing bout by Waihi was stopped b.v Stretton, and the Plains backs went on the attack, but Waihi’s defence was sound. Up and down play followed until time was called, the game ending with play hi midfield. Mr J. Cleave was referee.
