Tht largest turbine-driven electric generators hi the world have recently been installed in Brooklyn, New York, United States of America, so help provide cliictricity for the millions of people living in that great centre of population. These generators have a capacity of 62,500' kilovolt-amperes and are connected to steam turbines capable of developing 83,000 horsepower. When the rotor, or revolving part, of one of these large generators was .shipped from tlib works a special railroad car was required to carry the heavy load. The huge piece of machinery weighed 117 tons, and was placed in a wooden cradle weighing 15.000 pounds. Because the load was so heavy the speed of the car was limited to eight miles an hour, and it had to be taken over a longer route to avoid crossing certain bridges incapable of carrying the weight.
