PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.

COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the committee of the Paeroa District High School w r as held on Saturday evening last, Mr E. E. Gillman presiding over the following; Messrs C. H. Pascoe, H. J. Hayward. C. T. Mettam, W. T. Power, R. G. Southby. W. Purdie. N. U. Busby, G. If. Taylor (headmaster), and W. L. Lawrence, (secretary). Mr E. E. Gillman was unanimously elected chairman, and Mr C. H. Pascoe deputy-chairman, for the ensuing year. Messrs Gillman and Pascoe briefly returned thanks for the honour accorded them. The chairman welcomed Mr Purdie to the table. AVERAGE ROLLS. A circular letter was received from the N.Z. Educational Institute. Wellington, asking for support in its endeavours to urge upon the Department the importance of substituting the average roll attendance of the schools as a basis of calculations relating to the staffing of the school, the payment of capitation to committees, and the supply of school material and requisites. It was decided to accord full support to the Institute, and that a remit to that effect should be forwarded to the June meeting of the Primary School Committees’ Association. Auck-' land, with the request that the matter be taken up. RESIGNATION. The resignation of Mr W. JI. Taylor from the committee was accepted

with regret. It was decided to record the long and valuable services rendered to school matters in Paeroa by Mr Taylor, and that a letter of thanks and appreciation be sent to him. PURCHASE OF PHONOGRAPH. The headmaster reported that the phonograph for use in the school had come to hand, and was satisfactory. The matter of arranging the necessary finance to pay for the machine was left in the hands of the headmaster. It was decided to make an appeal to the public for donations of used phonograph records for the school. SC'.IOOLGROUND IMPROVEMENTS'. The chairman gave a brief resume of the work done in connection with school ground improvements, and outlined the work that remained to be done. EXTRA CONVENIENCES. It was reported that the work of installing modern conveniences and the erection of a new lavatory for the infants’ department was proceeding satisfactorily. The action of the chairman and secretary in extending the school hol’days from May 26 to June 2 owing to alterations to sanitary conveniences not being ready was endorsed. REMOVAL OF BUILDING. The chairman said that in accordance w>th instructions from Auckland an estimate had been prepared and forwarded by the board’s foreman, Mr Porter, for the removal of the wooden building (Standard VI. room) to its permanent site, reconditioning same, and the removal of the spoil in the vicinity. It was decided to write to the board's architect and Mr A. Burns, member of the board, and ask that the removal of the building be expedited, and also point out that the ground on which it stood was urgently needed as an additional playing area for the boys ; also that the room was rapidly deteriorating on its present site CARETAKER. Mrs B. Sheriff, Paeroa, was appointed caretaker of the school, BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. Several pamphlets from the Bible-iu-Schools Citizens' Propaganda Committee, Wellington, were read and discussed at length, each member voicing his opinion on the subject. • Mr Pascoe moved, and Mr Sbuthby seconded, that this committee take no action in the matter. Mr Mettam moved as an amendment that full support be given by this committee to the Citizens’ Propaganda Committee in its endeavours and support of Mr L. M. Isitt’s Bill, with reference to Bible in schools which is to be presented to Parliament during the coming session. Seconded by the chairman. Oji the amendment being put it was lost on the show of hands, and the resolution was then carried. ELECTRIC WIRES DANGER. The secretary reported that a Power Board official had complained that children had been seen flying kites in the vicinity of high-powered lines. The headmaster said he would again warn the scholars of the danger that existed. TRIBUTE TO MISS GIBSON. It was decided that a letter be sent to Miss Gibson, who is retiring from the teaching profession after a long and valuable career, expressing the thanks and appreciation of the committee for the splendid services rendered by her to the community and congratulating her on the fact that her class had always shown the highest results under her capable and painstaking tuition. THE AUCKLAND EXCURSION. The headmaster reported on the children’s excursion to Auckland last mouth to .visit the Special Service Squadron. The action of the chairman and secretary in arranging the trip was endorsed. It was decided to write and thank Mrs Morgan, the tlev. A. E. Jefferson, Messrs Silcock and Bigelow, the NoHhern Steam Ship Co., Auckland, and the officers and crew of the s.s. Taniwha for their efforts and

assistance rendered in connection with the excursion. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Pascoe and Mettam were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £22 17s 6d were passed for payment, H
