PLAINS COUNTY RATES.
• FIGURES FOR THE YEAR. Part of the business at the special meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council on Wednesday was to consider wh'at gneral rate should be struck in the various ridings for the current, year. Estimates were submitted by the county clerk for the general expenditure and the county engineer for the riding expenditure, and they were fully considered by the council, after which it was decided that in each riding the general rate would be 2d in the £. The general expenditure was given as that paid for the maintenance of public works, administration, travelling expenses, and miscellaneous, less the miscellaneous receipts. This was divided among the various ridings accord ng to valuation. Details of the general expenditure on public works maintenance, with the estimated cost for the previous year, the actual cost, and the estimated cost for the present year were as follows: Ngatea bridge, £200 ! , 5213, £2OO ; Wharepoa ferry, £5O, £62, £l6O (new punt) Komata North ferry, £20,, £23. £2O : Puke bridge, £75, £6B, £7O : Kopu ferry, £lO5, —- £IOO : motor trucks, £lOO, — — ; alteration to punt, : '£2so, ££l6; —; quarry development, £2OO, £396, £2OO. The tractor, roller, grader, portable engine, hordes, and Wharepoa derrick Fad been a charge on the general account for -i total of £27 more than the sum collected from the various works to cover maintenance and sinking fund, but this .was not expected to occur again. On administration and travelling expenses the figures showed little variation, being salaries, clerical £6OB, engineering £Bl2, inspector £3OO, travelling expenses £2BO, and representative on Highways Council £6O. On miscellaneous the estimates and actual expenditure for the year 192324 and the estimates for the year 1924-25 were: Printing, advertising, stationery, and postages £300; £484, £300; insurances £l5O, £79, £100; petties £4's, £55, £5O; valuation expenses £5O, £57, £5O; election and poll expenses £l2O, £154, £lOO ; audit fecr. £?2, — £5O ; bank charges and interest £4OO, £317, £4OO ; county car £l5O, £156, £l5O ; Health Department £55, £5O, £5O; miscellaneous £l4B, £317, £3OO. The total estimated, general expenditure for the present year was £4360, against which the estimated miscellaneous receipts were £B6O, which included £2OO for licenses and fees and £560 for subsidies. - The portions of the general expenditure to be borne by the various ridings was as follows : Kopuarhhi, £400; Horahia, £452 ; Turua, £430 ; Kerepeehi, £335 ; Netherton, £434 ; Patetonga, £291 ; Ngatea, £368 ; Pipiroa, £374 ; Waitakaruru, £416. The engineer’s estimates for the year 1924-25 for the various ridings were as follows :— Kopuarahi. Riding.—Metalling Pipi-roa-Orongo Road, £340 ; metalling Ngataipua East Road, £105; metau 75yards, £75; labour, £150; contingencies, £l2O ; total, £790. Horahia Riding.—Metal, 300 yards, £3OO ; labour,' £200", contingencies, £lOO ; Orchard East extension, £2OO . total, £BOO ;_ Turua Riding.—Metal, £350 ; labour, £300; contingincies, £75; contribution to Town Board roads, £lOO ; total; £575. . ... Kerepeehi Riding—Forming. Pekapeka Road, £lOO ; . metal, , 250 yards, £250; labour,. £lso'; £l5O ; total,; £650.. . Netherton Riding.r—Metal, 450 yards, £450; labour,. £2OO ; contingencies, £250 ; total, £9OO. Patetonga Riding;—Devil’s Elbow, £l2O ; cutting at pound, £25 ; KaihereOhinewai Road, £25 ; Maukoro Landing Road,. £3O ; contingencies, £250 ; total, £875. Pipiroa Riding.—Metal, 350 yards, £350; labour, £150; contingencies. £250.; total, £750. Waitakaruru Riding.—Allocated for Miranda Road, £4OO ; metal, 100 yards, ■ £B5; labour, £2OO ; contingencies, £175 ; total, £B6o'. The rateable value of the various ridings and the amount the general rate of 2d in the £ would produce was given as follows: Kopuarahi; £131,725—£1122 Horahia. £151,78'5— £1264 ; Turua (less the Town Board area), £145,360—£1016 ; Kerepeehi, £112,891 —£940 ; Netherton, £145,895 — £1206 ; Patetonga, £97,776—£814 ; Ngatea: £123,955—£1032 ; Pipiroa, £126,245 —£1052; Waitakaruru,. £11®,742— £ll6B. The amount of the debit or credit balance in the riding account from the previous year and the amount of outstanding rates were taken into/ consideration when fixing the current year’s general rate.
