Cr, Harris seconded, and in support said that he had nothing against Cr. Mayn, but Cr. Miller had been straightforward in all his actions, was in touch with the affairs of the county.. and was handy to the office, Cr. Miller said that Since he had made the statement about not allowing himself to be’nominated he had been asked to reconsider the matter, and he hud agreed. He did not wish to hilluence any man, and if Cr. Mayu was .willing both would leave the chamber and let. the council discuss the matter and vote. Cr. McLoughlin said that lie had nothing against Cr. Miller, but he thought the change would bo advisable.

Cr. Parfitt .said he would support tiie second nomination. Cr. Hare said that he had no fault to find, but he thought it would be in the best interests of his riding to have a change. Cr. Nicholson said he was in favour of Cr. Mayn. Cr. Miller’s own remarks had led him thus. The matter was then put to the meeting, and the voting was as follows ; For Cr. Mayn. Crs. McLoughlin. Hare, and Nicholson ; for Cr. Miller : Cr,s Harris, Hayward, Madgwick, and Parfitt. ’ , The clerk then declared Cr. J. CMiller elected chairman for the ensuing year., Cr. Miller then look the chair amid acclamation and thanked members for appointing him and for their remarks prior to the election. He said that he knew he had made errors in the past, but would like members to point out where he had failed. It appeared from the division that he had made numerous mistakes and had fail.ed to give satisfaction, so he would like his errors pointed out, as he felt that the chairman should have the full confidence of the council. He would carry on as he had done in the past, except that members might find that he might stand on nis dignity more in the future. Cr. Mayn congratulated Cr. Miller on his appointment, and said that had he boon elected he probably would not have been able to improve upon anything. Cr. Miller would doubtlessly discover his faults and oveieoinc them, and he felt sure that the council would get a fair run in the future from the chairman, as it had done in the past.

Cr. McLoughlin also congratulated Cr Miller, and expressed the hope that the council would carry on more harmoniously in the future.
