—— — Sft&UL COUNCIL MEETING. •* A special' meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council was held oil Tuesday afternoon to consider extraordinary business and pass special resolutions. Cr. J. C. Miller presided over a full council. Cr. H. Hare left the meeting early in the’ day. WATER SUPPLY. The first business brought up was. in connection with the proposed water supply scheme for the Pipiroa and parts of Waitakaruru and Ngatea ridings. . . A special resolution constituting the area previously decided upon as the Hauraki Plains West water supply district, as from July 15 ’ 1924, was ’ moved by Cr. Pdrfitt, seconded by Cr. Harris, and carried. In regard to the cost of preliminary expenses, the clerk said that a. loan could be raised for this purpose provided the consent of the GovernorGeneral had been obtained. , On the motion o£ Cr. Parfitt, seconded by Cr. McLoughlin, it was de-, cided that the clerk take the necessary steps to get this consent. , In reply to Cr/Madgwick the cleik stated that the control of the scheme must be vested in the County Council. This was compulsory under the Act. Cr. Hayward pointed out that this world greatly increase the work of the staff, and probably mean that in future the council would have to meeon two days a month. He thought that there should be some amendment to the Act to permit of the area controlling its own scheme by means x a water board, so that the cost administration would not. fall on the whole county. , , Cr Parfitt pointed out that tnmajor part of the work would be done by a committee of three. machinery. in compliance with the council’s requesfthe' engineer reported as follows on the machinery required to be purchased immediately out of the ma'chinery loans : Tramline at Patetonga '£3ooo, two locomotives £1500.40 trucks £2OOO, three hoppers £9oo', five deiricks and three grabs £9OO, four punts £4150, slip for punts £350, berthage for punts £5OO, roller £1250, spihying machine and truck £4BO, purchase of land, for quarry and Quarry eqiupment £l5OO, jetty at Patetqpga £350,. shed for housing machinery £585. In? terest on this would be about £2OOO, bringing the total to about £20,000. Cr. Hayward urged that something should be done as soon as possible at the Maukoro quarry. The engineer thought that there was no chance of obtaining a«y metal next summer. ' Cr. Hayward moved that the engineer be instructed to present a comprehensive report of the tram-line and quarry, and his opinion as to whether the work could be expedited by letting portions by contract; also that he be. given power to deal with tlie Public Works * Department with regard to the ..dredging, of the carnal along the Maukoro Landing road. Seconded by Cr. Mayn and carried. .. It was also decided that the engineer shculd approach the power Board in regard to obtaining electric power to drive the crusher, ... . On Cr.'Hayward’s motion the clerk was instructed to take steps to raise the sum recommended by. the engineer. - -;• ;■ . • WANDERING STOCK., The county : inspector was granted permission to prosedute a farmer who cvn.tirually pffi'taitted his stock to wall (let on the roads and stop-banks, and also to 'take proceedings against several settlers who refused-to register their ’dogs. MAIN HIGHWAYS. The engineer was authorised to tor- • ward proposals to the Highways Council for the main highway from the Ngatea bridge to the Puke bridge for the purpose of getting the subsidy voted. CANAL ROAD. Hi reply to Cr. Harris the clerk said that no reply had been received, from the Lands Drainage Department with reference to the metalling of the WaitaKaruru-Maukoro canal bans road. ' . Miller reported that the District Highways Council was of_ tlie opinion that if the council persisted in requesting that this be done the other local bodies through whose areas the road passed would make the same request. So far this had not been done. Practically no roads had been declared Government roads iff the highways district, and tlie District Council was of the opinion that if it start was inside on account of the poverty of the adjoining lands applications would pour in from all districts. HOUSING OF MACHINERY. ! On the motion of Cr. Madgwick the council passed votes of thanks to, Mi ~ Taskei, of Turua, and the N.Z. Co-op. Dairy Co., for the use of sheds for housing comity machinery, and to Mr , Ansfbr<J W. .donating poles for the hopper. 'lt J was ' decided to dismantle the shed. recently purchased at Karangaiiake and re-erect it at Ngatea to house the machinery.
