WAIHI BOXING ASSN.
TANNER SHIELD TOURNAMENT. arrangements for MAY 31, .Arrangements are well in hand for tlie forthcoming seven-aside boxing tournament' to be held in the King’s Theatre, Waihi, next Saturday evening, May 31. This tournament, probably the first of its kind in New Zealand, will mark the opening of a series of contests for the Tanner Challenge Shield, a valuable and handsome example of the jewellers’ art. Clarrio’ Blackburn, the well-known professional welter, who is conducting a boxing academy at Frankton Junction, is providing the challenging team, which includes the well-known lightweight Nelson McKriight, and also Crompton, Hamilton, Durant, Willis, Whittington, Ike McKnight, and Pancho Villa, a really formidable team. They are in the best of condition, and as Clarrie is a great favourite in Waihi he and his team are sure of a rousing welcome. The Waihi defenders, Shcrgold, Fol las, Will and Jim Colledge, Craig, Warne McCowatt, and McCoid, have had a thorough preparation, and the visitors will find in these lads opponents who can give and take a lot of punishment. During the evening Mr H. Poland, M.P. for the district, will invest Messrs 8. Tanner and F. A Stamp with- W.B.A. life-member badges. New Zealand’s premier referee, Mr T. Sampson, will be sole judge of the contests, and the association and competitors are both fortunate that his services arc available.
