FATAL ACCIDENT.

« KARANGAHAKE BATTERY-HAND/ CRUSHED BY IRON PIPE. A distressing accident occurred al Karangahake yesterday afternoon, resulting in the death of Mr R. W. R Hungerford, aged 23 years, a wellknown resident of Karangahake. Deceased and a man named Dickson were engaged in dismantling some fittings in the air chamber of the ol.d Wcodstock battery when the staging on which they were working gavf way and precipitated Hungerford c the bottom, a distance of about sh feet. It. appears that when the staging fell it dislodged a cradle support ing a cast-iron pipe weighing aboul half a ton, and this pipe fell acrosi the unfortunate man. pinning him «•. the floor and dislocating his jaw, neck and both shoulders. Willing hand: were quickly on the scene and movec the pipe, only to find that death hat been instantaneous. ■ Much sympathy is felt tor the parents of deceased, who are well-knowr and highly respected residents Ol Karangahake. THE INQUEST. An inquest was held at Karangahake this morning by Mr W. M. Wall nutt, and after formal evidence hat been taken a verdict of accidenta' death was returned, no blame beim attachable to anyone. The coronei extended symapthy to the relatives ol the deceased.
