PREPARING FOR WORK. PROBABLE START TO-MORROW. Croat excitement prevailed in Paero i early this morning when it became generally known that the railway strike was declared off. thi making inquiries fipm the secretary of the local branch of the A.S.R.S. it was learned that official intimation had been received from the executive that the strike was declared off as from midnight last. No particulars have yet been received locally as to the basis of settlement between the railway workeis an ! the ■ Government. The general feeling among .the local members of the A.S.R.S. is that as they have been instructed to resume work by their executive, the position is satisfactory to them, and they feel contented that the executive is acting in the best interests of the railwaymen. Up to the time of going to no definite timetable has been drawn' up for the running of trains to-day, but it is hoped to despatch a special train to Waihi, and also one to the Waikato, this evening. The loco, men were engaged in getting up steam in the engines this morning, and it is understood Hint it takes from four to five hours to get up sufficient steam to drive a locomotive, so it will be late this afternoon before anything mud: is done. The various gangs of surfacemen resumed work this morning, and the insnec'.ion of lines will be made this afternoon. It is anticipated that the normal services will be resumed to-morrow.
