THE STRIKE.

NO SKIN OF SETTLEMENT. DAILY BOAT SERVICE. There have been no fresh developments towards a settlement of the railway strike. A rumour was cur> rent this morning that arrangements had been completed for the running of one train daily to Wahi, but on inquiries being made it was learned that the rumour was without foundation, and that no attempt would be. made to run a skeleton service in Paeroa at present. The local branch of the A.S.R.S. held its regular meeting in the Relume Soldiers' Club this morning, but tbe members were not prepared to make any statement. The motor services to and from va -ious parts of the district continue to be maintained, and are well patronised. The Northern S.S. Co. is successfully. coping with traffic, both passenger and cargo, inwards and outwards, and there is little or no conge diop at the Puke wharves. In conversation with -some of tlvj pi’.iininent businessmen in Paeroa this morning it was learned that as yet the strike has made no appreciable difference to the retail trade. As a matter of fact, in nearly every instance the businessmen interviewed stated that the returns last week were in excess of those of the week before. The heavy rain which fell during the week-end is causing the local bodies some concern over the maintenance of the main roads. Every endeavour is being made to keep ths roads in a passable state for mototraffic, and given reasonably fine weather it is nbt anticipatcfl that any great ]ifficulties will be met with. For the convenience of the travelling public the Northern S.S. Co. has started a daily steamer service between Paeroa and Auckland.
