The three misfortunes which recently befell the trawler Sea Lion on successive Fridays have no doubt mine to strengthen the longstanding bejief that Friday is an unlucky day for all connected with the sea. And that this superstition is shared by landsmen is proved by the fact Iliac fewer passengers sail on Friday than on any other day of the week. Yet so far as the British Navy is concerned Friday cannot be considered an unluck day. Il was on Friday. July 29, 1588, that the Spanish Arnr.ida was defeated ; on Friday, June 13. 1653, that Van Trump's fleet was smashed off the North Foreland. Blake, won his greatest victory on Friday, April 20, 1657, and on Friday, July, 1779. the American fleet was defeated off the coast of New England. Rodney's great victory over the French occurred on Friday, April 12, ■1782, and on Friday, September 13, of the same year the British fleet destroyed the combined French and Spanish fleets in the Bay of Gibraltar. \ Friday saw the raising of the long siege of Gibraltar, and although Trafalgar was fought on a Monday, it was on the previous Friday that the French admiral made the fatal decision to come put and give battle. Friday i.s supposed to be the worst day of the week for the theatre, yet in point of fact Monday is the day when audiences are most difficult to please. On land Tuesday is 'decidedly the most unlucky’ day. Looking through various lists of disasters, such as fir<>s. accidents, and crimes, T find that Tuesday shows a distinct preponderance in this respect. Tn one respect Saturday is the worst day. for it is on the last day of, the wfek that most crimes of violence are committed. Monday is the worst day’ for most triulesmen. Wednesday is wedding d-.iv. more marriages being celebrated oh that than on any other day of the wook.
