BOROUGH WORKS.
♦ COMMITTEE'S REPORT. i'he following report was submitted to I he Paeroa Borough Council at its last meeting by the Works Committee :— During the month the usual maintenance work has been carried out, and some patching has been done to the main roads. The street improvement works and sewerage works are causing a good deal of work for the staff in lowering water pipes, etc., and this has taken up some time during the past month. The bridge in Quarry Road which crosses the outfall drain collapsed, and. being beyond repair, the foremna was instructed to replace it with 3ft concrete pipes, making a culvert 18ft wide. Your committee has given full consideration to the evident fact that very poor progress is being made with the various street improvement works that have been authorised. It is qui.te impossible to make any headway under the conditions obtaining. Afler consultation with the Finance Committee it was decided to purchase two horses and gear so that work may continue without interruption and to order a new dray. Satisfactory purchases were made, and wo ask the Council’s endorsement of these actions. If the work of the borough is to be carried out with economy and despatch it is absolutely essential to have our plant and gear and shed accommodation. We recommend that a •shed be built at the borough yard at a cost of approximately £l2O ; That a suitable scoop and plough be purchased, and inquiries be made concerning a water-cart so that when roads arc scarified and roiled, etc., they can be water-bound ; also that a small horse mower be purchased so that the hand scytheing in the domain or bn sides of streets may be more economically done than at present. Now that one employee is working horses we recommend that another man be appointed to the position and that the Works Committee make the arrangements. Tf these proposals are carried into effect the staff should be in a position to give satisfactory results to the Council and a definite improvement "'hould be expected. We recommend that, following the custom of previous years, an early inspection of streets, footpaths, bridges, and drains be made by the whole Council so that .estimates and a programme may he prepared for the current financial year.
