RECENT FLOOD DAMAGE.

FURTHER DETAILS. Reports are constantly being received as to the amount of damage dene and the loss suffered by settlers in the district by’ the recent floods. The latest information to hand concerns .some ol tlie settlers v. hose properties are situated in the vicinity pf Waimaric Bend, near the corner tf Robinson’s road, ami down the river as far as the Hikutaia and Netherton roads.

Among some of the settlors whose pastures were damaged in that area may be mentioned Messrs E. Lemon, 100 acres <>f grass seed, valued at about £35, ruined by flood water ; A. Grace, 100 acres of grass badly damaged ; W. Watson, 70 acres of green feed destroyed, necessitating the early diving off of his milking cows: J. M"rdoch, 45 acres of feed; and' S. Ho.slop, who estimates his loss on 100 acres at £45, There arc also a number of other properties situated in that locality that have suffered corresponding losses from the action of flood water. It appears that the soakage of water from the hills was exceptionally' heavy, and this, combined with the fact that the river found its way through a gap in the stop-bank, caused the flood water to flow over the properties, causing the damage mentioned.

The Public Works Department hrs a suction dredge at work improving the main outfall, known as Alex-, and.ers Drain, and there is also .a drag-line dredge engaged on furthe?’ step-bank work, which work, when completed, it is anticipated will confine the water to its proper channels and prevent further damage to pastures in future.
