The necessity of improving the Piako River below Ngatea to enable it to cope with flood water was stressed at a meeting of the Farmers’ Union at Ngatea on Saturday last. It was pointed out that the, dredging •>[ the river above Ngatea had, during the last flood, permitted the water from the upper reaches to come down so quickly that the lower parts wers flooded. On the motion of Mr McDuff, seconded by Mr Cleaver, it was deci ded'fo'ask the Government to dredge the river below Ngatea to increase its carrying capacity afnd, also to expedite the construction of the Rawerawe canal.
