KEREPEEHI SPORTS.
<— EASTEII MONDAY MEETING. The seventh annual sports gathering of the Kerepeehi Sports Associa tion was held on the Showground on Easter Monday. The attendance was below the average, being no doubt affected by the threatening weather and the fact that the Wharepoa ferry was not running. e The extensive improvements carried by the A. and P. Association to .the showground make it an ideal place for such a meeting. Now that it has been cleared the races can be followed right round the course. However, the effect of the recent heavy rains was still noticeable, and after the first few events the grounds became rough and slippery, causing sev-. ''eral horses to fall. In the Ngatea Handicap a mare owned by Constable Devereaux and ridden oy Mr W. Thompson broke its leg and had to Jae shot. Two horses bumped while racing for the Kerepeehi Cup an I came down, one of the" riders, Mr E. Handley, of Paeroa, receiving a severe shaking and an injury to his head. He was attended by the Patetonga district nurse, and afterwards ’ taken to the Thames Hospital. As in previous years, the refreshment booth was run by a committee of the association. Messrs Jamieson. Murdock, Innes, Masters, Smith, and Strong were kept busy all day, the takings totalling over £B6. The absence of a hand on the ground made the wait between the various events very tedious, and at about 3.30 p.m., when light rain commenced to fall, a great many left for home. Those who remained were rewarded, for the best eyents
were .it the end of the programme. The chopping events, which usually prove the greatest attraction, had this year to be abandoned owing to insufficient entries, the choppers following the bigger meetings. However, other events were substituted for the chops. The entries on the whole were good, and some keen competition resulted. Great credit is due to the secretary (Mr J. Twist) and members of the association for the enormous amount of work done to make the meeting attractive. It was unfortunate that tlie weather deprived the association of the successful meeting it deserved. HORSE EVENTS.
