WA IT AK A RUHR. HOCKEY. Now that the tennis season is drawing to a close the young ladies of Wr.itakaruru have hit upon the idea of forming a hockey club as an outlet for their exuberance. However, thev are content to make haste slowly. They expect to have two teams this season, and failing the formation of other clubs on the Plains will play amongst them.seves with the idea of becoming sufficiently proficient by next season to meet outside teams. The club held a very successful little dance in the Waitakaruru Hall on Wednesday evening for the purpose of raising funds to provide hockey sticks for the members. Although the bad roads and a heavy shower of rain lessened the attendance those who were present spent a most enjoyable time. THE MAIN ROAD. The bridge across the. Waitakaruru Stream on the Pokeno Road which war- washed aw-tty by the recent flood has been temporarily replaced. Public Works Department men arc busy repairing, the embankment from wb’ch the clay beneath the fascines was washed away. At present the road js only open tp horse traffic. It is understood that it is the intention of the Public Works Department to erect a substantial iron bridge across the Waitakaruru Stream. It is expected that the structure will be six feet higher and much longer, and will be erected in sections, the first of which should arrive shortly. WINTERING OF CATTLE. Many enquiries are being received by a Waitakaruru business man for grazing on the hill country during the coming winter. NGATEA. A DANCE. The Hauraki Plains’ Referees Association held a very successful dance in tlie Ngatea Hall on Tuesday evening. There were about 30 couples present, and an enjoyable time was spent. Mr A. Williams, of Kopu, presided at the piano in his usual style, and Mr J. Banks as M.C. kept the dances going regularly until an early hour. The proceeds of the function ar<> in aid of the association’s funds. SCHOOL CONCERT. Pup’Js of the Ngatea School are now practising for a concert in aid of the school funds, tl will be lied .some time after Easter. HOCKEY. An effort is being made tp form a ladies’ hockey club in Ngatea. FOOTBALL. Unless the Ngatea Club can find some new players it will have to dis - band. Of last season’s seniors only six remain. KEREPEEHI. DANCE. The Kerepeehi Football Club heli its annual dance in the hall on Thursday. About thirty couples Were pre • sent, and a pleasant time was spent. During the supper interval Mr J. H. Nicholson, president of the club, thanked the public for the support given the club during the past season, and particularly thanked the ladies of the district who had provided afternoon tea for the teams after every match. He also thanked the players, the management committee, and Messrs Hcrkt and Innes, who had granted the use of the hall as a changing room for the players. The medals donated by Messrs Avoy ami Nicholson for the best all round senior and junior player were presented to Mr R. Steedman and Mr Hurikinp..
