OHINEMURI COUNTY.
' ■ 4 , ENGINEERS REPORT. flic county engineer (Mr E. Shaw) presented the following monthly report to the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council on Thursday :— “ Proposals were sent for gravelling portion of old Te Aroha Road near Rotokohu, and also for improving W’Hmata Road, for which tenders close to day. ■ “ The following works have been I completed : Forming and culverting ■litp chains of Patterson’s road. Waihi: and also the two contracts for metalling on Paeroa-Tc Aroha main road (14 chains at Hennah’s hill and 24 chains at Waitoki) have been lolled and blinded. This work now overcomes the portions which were so bad last winter. The regrading of the unmetalled portion of this road is being done, and the steam roller is being used to draw the grader in place of horses and is proving satisfactory when the conditions are suitable. “ All certificates for payments under grants were forwarded to the Public Works Department and prompt payment received before March JI. “Re Puke Bridge and Attendant’s Shanty.— l would advise the council to bring under the notice of the i Public Works Department the advisability of having the bridgekeeper’s shanty removed put of the flood area to higher ground. “D rying to a breach of the by-law, re driving over the Puke bridge at other than a walking pace, I found it necessary to take action and had the offender, who had on several occa-> sions been warned, brought before the Court. He pleaded guilty and was fined, and I hope this will be a warning to others. “Re Heavy Traffic By-Law.—The time has again come round for the closing of roads against heavy traffic during the months of May, June, July, August, and September. As this will be the la.st meeting of the Council before the by-law comes into force, I thought probably the council would care to discuss the matter. ‘iThe main bridge over the Komati Creek on the Thames road 'S showing signs that a new structure will be required in the near future—a new stringer being required, and the decking repaired from time to time. The approximate cost will be from £25 t< £3O. I would recommend-that a notice be erected drawing the public’s attention that no load exceeding four tons be allowed over same. “Owing to the exceptionally heavy downpour of rain in the Waihi dis-, trict on Saturday, the river rose rapidly and washed away the approach • to the Ratarua bridge, stopping traffic. This has now been restored and traffic resumed.
