A ladies’ hockey team is being formed in Waitakaruru, rand already some eighteen ladies have signified their intention of becoming member.;. A meeting will be held on Wednesday next.
Testimony to the value of newspaper advertising was given at a meeting of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers’ Association, when the question of the adoption of an emblem for the association was under discussion. The main object in proposing the adoption of an emblem was to draw the attention of members to the advertisements calling attention to the monthly meetings of the association. One member, while admitting that the association had been well treated by the newspapers in the matter of reports of its meetings, questioned whether the association got full value for its expenditure on advertising, and suggested that it would be cheaper to circularise members through the post. The chairman (Mr F. W. Cone) said that he disagreed with this view of the matter. They spent a certain sum monthly in advertising their meetings, but when they saw in the Monday’s papers the reports of the meetings they had to admit that they were worth 50 times the amount they spent in advertising. Besides, if they did no! advertise they would not l.e up to date. “We must support the newspapers if we wish to be up tn date,” lie added. Mr H. Morgani, the secretary, stated that they had tried convening meetings by circular, but had found that the result was not so good as when they advertised.
