WAIHI BEACH ROAD.

QUESTION OF REPAIRS. PROPOSED TOLL GATE. At last Thursday's meeting of the Waihi Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr W. M. Wallnutt) reported having recently conferred with the chairman, engineer and clerk of the Ohineni'.iri County Council on the question of repairing the Waihi Beach Road, and the responsibilities of the bodies concerned in the matter of contributions, The chairman (Mr A. R. Robinson) had said that the settler,s on the road had not received the proposal for a loan sympathetically, and it

seemed the best course would be o .provide a toll gate. He, the Mayor, was inclined to think that this would be the best means of levying charges on those using the road, and would go far towards meeting the cost of putting it in order. The question of the Government taking the road over had been mentioned tp Mr Poland, M.P., who expressed the opinion that any move in that direction would be futile. It therefore seemed that the best course would be for the AVaihi and Ohinemuri Councils to send delegate® to tile Tauranga County Council in order to see what the latter would de towards Forming the road, anil then to go further into the matter of a toll gate for the provision of which he be’.ieved the consent of the Minister could be obtained. It was absolutely essential that everything should ne done for the next holiday season, as tiie Waihi Bead) scheme had to be goiie on with, and provision made io meet the interest charges and sinkingfund which involved the Waihi Council in an expenditure of over £4OO n year. So far as the scheme itself was concerned, he was sure that later on Waihi’s seaside resort would become a valuable asset to the borough. The Mayor then moved that the town ■clerk and himself represent the borough on the deputation to the Tauranga County Council.
