KIRIKIRI BRIDGE.
DESIGN BY PUBLIC WORKS.
'ESTIMATED TOTAL COST £52.000
At the Plains County meeting yesterday a letter from the Minister of Public Works in reply to the Council’.-: letter was read, stating that the design for Kirikiri bridge recommended bj r the department was that of a bridge with steel plate girders and timber deck on concrete pipes, withfour passing places and an opening Span. Such a bridge, in the absence of detailed drawing was estimated to cost approximately £46,000, and with appwaches £52,000. Those figures, however, were only approximate estimates, and it was possible that whe i iinal surveys have been made and detailed plans prepared they may be amended. When formal 1 esolutions 1 equesting the department to undertake the erection have been received engineering surveys and pla.ns would b<* completed and final estimates talien out. When this was known the necessary preliminary arrangement-, in regard to the finance and the payment of the local body’s quota of the cost would have tp be arranged before any work could be undertaken
Cr. Harris moved, and Cr. Parfitt seconded, that the formal 1 esolution, as suggested, be approved. Cr. Mayn pointed out that there was a resolution on the books stating that the council would only proceed if a subsidy of 15s in the £, or over, was granted.
; Cr. McLoughlin said that motion was carried at a conference. He would support the bridge, but was not supporting the bridge policy of the coun ty.
Cr. Hare said that the Netherton witepayers- were given to understand that the bridge would not be gone or, with without a 15s subsidy, and he would oppose the motion. Cr. Madgwick said that Turua hau been against the bridge until it had been suggested as part of the highway. Turua was not getting a highway, but the. ratepayers realised tha: the bridge was necessary. There had been opposition owing to the fact that no poll of the ratepayers was to nc held, ahd the doubt that the structure would cost a great deal more than the estimate. However, the statement of a definite sum removed that danger.
The clerk reported that there was resolution on the books, as state! by Cr. Mayn.
Cr. McLoughlin moved that a spacial meeting be held on March 21 to consider a noticc»of motion to rescind ;the resolution and to propose the formal resolution suggested. Seconded by Cr. Harris and carried. The clerk was instructed to notify the minister and Mr Rhodes of the conncil’s intention.
