THE KOPU WHARF.
LANDING STAGE AV ANTED.
Duiing the tour of the members of the Thames Harbour Board on Wednesday last a call was made at the Kopu Wharf for the purpose of. letting members see the state of the stimture In view of the request made some* months ago by the Turua Ratepayers and Citizens Association that a floating pontoon similar tc that at Turua be installed for the benefit ef launch passengers, particularly tho-e using the Turua-Kopu service. The wharf was found to be in a deplorable state, a great number of the piles ano. stavs were eaten ■ right through, stringers were broken, and of the handrail so weak as to be .1 menace.
Asked the life of the present structure the Harbour Board, engineersaid that it had been dead many years. Tire state of the steps used l>y launch passengers was particularly noticed by members, being in very bad order and obviously unsafe r or general use.
It was pointed out th at scows, etc., using the wharf often did sweat damage to the steps, and for that reason the engineer would not having them repaired. The alternative . was a floating pontoon. This, with the necessary piles and strengthening, would cost about £OOO. It nas pointed out that use could easily be found , for the pontoon should it be found that when the Kirikiri Bridge opened there was not sufficient traffi. 1 to warrant it being maintained. • The chairman of the board pointed out th.it the state of its finances -wassuch that the finding of such a sum would require some • consideration. However, he said, if the users of the proposed landing stage would be prepared to pay a small tax to meet the interest and sinking fund of a loan the Board would no doubt be to make the necessary ararngements. The driver of. the, launch’ said that the number of adult passengers carried each way per week averaged about 40.
It was decided that the Turua representative should bring the matter W before the Ratepayers and Association at its next meeting.
