REGULAR MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Turua Tmvn Board was held on Wednesday evening, when there were present: Messrs J. Mules (chairman), J. T. D-ivieo. F. Beck. F. Olsen, A. P. Gardiner, A. C. Ansford, and J. E. Green (clerk). TOWN HALL LOA?.’. The secretary, Board and Council Fii'Hishing Co., wrote stating thru after making extensive inquiries from nv hat were considered the best sources in New Zealand it was found that probably the loan could be placed locally at 6 per eent., plus 1 per cent, sinking fund, for a term of 36% years. Owing to the pressure on the market by many local body issues for large amounts it was a matter of extreme difficulty for small loans ,o be ente - - taiiied. However, latest reports indlehteu that the hoard’s Prue could Im placed under the above terms. The clerk reported that the chairman and he had waited upon the manager of the Bank of New Zealand concerning the raising of the loan. They nad been informed that similar loans had been raised at 6 per cent., and that *the board’s issue would receive favourable cosideraticm in Wellington. There were many loans on th? market at present. The cost of .raising the loan, legal costs, stamping. or debentures, first year’s interest etc., would be about £250, and the arrangements could he made within six weeks. He had pointed out that the security offered by the Town .Board was good, as its- indebtedness was very small.

Mr Gardiner reported that sixteen signatures had so far been obtained to 11-. e petition, which was being circulated instead of holding p poll. A thorough canvass would be made within the next few days, and when it was completed a special meeting of the board would be held. THE ROADING SCHEME. , Mr W. F. Dengate, Onehunga, wrot? in reply to a letter from the board that he was making inquiries from the Northern Steamship Co. and the Ralwa.v Department regarding the transhipment of his steam toad roller. In his opinion, to send it by rail to Paeroa would be better than to have it taken to pieces to transport by boat. The roller was a steam-driven ten-ton niachin'e, with 20in wheels and detachable scarifier. The terms of hire were £5 10s a day from the time he left Auckland until he returned again. He would find driver, fuel, oil, etc. Later he wrote slating . that the shipping company offered r.o encouragement for shipping- the roller. He asked if the board would guarantee him four months’ work from, say. April 1, and find water for his engine. ' SUPPLY OF METAL. Considerable discussion took place on the metal supply question. The chairman reported that the Kauaeranga quarry was now capable of delivering a two-yard truck of metal every six minutes. The only hitch was the transportation. Air Ansford reported that a man with a punt had gone up that day to inspect the creek.

It was suggested that the board should wait until this man reported. The quarry owners would deliver the metal, in the punts supplied, to Shortland at 10s 6d a yard, or at the hopper for 9s 6d. Two towing launches wound be required, one of shallow drau-gl I to wo>k the Kauaeranga River and a strong launch to tow, against the tide if necessary, on the Wailioti River. TOWN DRAINAGE. Mr A. A. Gardiner reported in the conference with the Hauraki Drainage Board, as reported in the '’Gazelle.” He suggested ti'.at a public meeting of the residents concerned should be held. it was decided that Messrs Gardiner, Davis, Bock, and Mules be a committee to go into the question ami report to the board. ESTIMATES. The chairman reported on th? special meeting held to consider the estimates for the forthcoming year, as reported in the “Gazette.” Mr Gardiner said that there were some pipes lying on Hauraki Road that would be suitable for extending the dinin at the cornier of Raratuna and Wa-ihou .streets. The Board also had a pipe for Mill Creek, so that the footpath could be continued near the factory, .

In regard to piping the roadside drain at the tennis court corner, the Lands Drainage Engineer would no", permit of. pipes being put in unless they were of at least five feet m diameter. In regard to improvement of the footpath from the store to the post, office, it was estimated that this would cost about £75.
