BOWLING CLUB LIGHTING.
deduction asked for. APPLICATION REFUSED. The question of reducing charges for lighting on the Paeroa Bowling Club’s green for night playing came up for discussion at yesterday's meeting of the Thames Val'-ey Power Board when a further request from the Paeroa Borough Council for a reduction was read.
Mr Flatt said that the council was satisfied that it should receive some consideration. He thought it ""as only reasonable that the council .should receive at least the same reduction as was accorded the various dairy factories that were also consuming powe” after peak-load hours. He would ask the Board to instal a time-switch, to ■sperate from 9 p.m., and that the lighting of the green be not permitted on Friday evenings. He had no wish to jeopardise the functions of the board in any way, but tie thought that some consideration could very well be shown the council, which was making every endeavour to popularise Paeroa and afford additional facilities for recreation for the public.
The engineer said he thought that it would be establishing a precedent to instal a time-switch to opprate from 9 p in. The hour should be 9.30 p.m. The chairman said he was desirous of assisting the Paeroa people, but the matter had to be considered on broad lines, as no doubt requests of a similar nature would be received from other towns. The crux of the matter wa« the peak-load hours, combined with the creation of a precedent. Mr Flatt said that from the point of view of the council, as well as the bowling club. 9 p.m. was considered a fair hour, provided no reduction was sought, for Friday night, or whatever the late shopping night might be. The chairman said that in view of his having to address a meeting of ratepayers, in Paeroa at an early date he would like to grant the use of a time switch from 8 p.m., but he must be fair. (Laughter.) In reply to Mr Strange the engineer stated I hat the present rate was 6s Bd, and if a time-switch was' put in to operate from 9.30 p.m. the cost would be 5s sd. Should the board decide to instal a time-switch to operate from 9 p.m.. and exclude Friday evenings, the charge would be approximately 4s 2d. He could not recommend the adoption of 9 p.m.
Mr Arthur was of the opinion that if any reduction could be made the primal y producers should receive i-. and not sports bodies.
' Mr Flatt said that the board was in a position to retail power at night time at cheaper rates to any class of the community, and he failed to see why a bowling club or a borough counci’ should not share in any reduction under that heading. On the resolution being put it was dec’ared lost on the showing of hands.
