THE Hauraki Plain Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto : Public Service. MONDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1924. REGIMENTAL HEADQUARTERS.

- - — That the people of Paeroa are apparently slow to make the most of opportunities to advertise the town and place it more prominently before the public is often commented upon by outsiders, as. well as newcomers to the town. There appears to be a feeling of contentment and satisfaction —especially among some of the older residents of the town —to calmly await the turn of events and do little, if anything, towards assisting .any progressive movement. At the inception of the Territorial scheme in New Zealand in 1911 the Hauraki Regiment, was created, with headquarters at Paeroa. It is unnecessary to reiterate the deeds achieved by this regiment during the war, or mention the large number of officers and rank and file who performed valorous deeds and wan many decorations, thus adding further laurels to the regiment and stimulating pride in the hearts of the people of Paeroa and district. Some three years ago the headquarters of tbs regiment were transferred from Paeroa to Morrinsville on account of Lieut.-Colonel R. C. Allen, D. 5.0., who was at that time officer commanding the aHurakf Regiment, living at Morrinsville. About two years ago Lient.-Colonel Allen was posted to the Retired List, and the ■next senior officer to be appointed as cfficer commanding was Majm- E. Edwards, who resides in Paeroa. Under these circumstances it would be appropriate if application were made to have the headquarters again gazetted to Paeroa. Apart from any sentimental reasons. Paeroa has always been the headquarters of the No. 2 Defence Group, and as such the a-vjutant of the regiment has been stationed in this town, so for the purposes of administration it would appear that Paeroa is the natural centre, and is in an excellent position to justify the claim for such an honour.
