TENNIS.
HIKUTAIA V. THAMES). The return match, Thames Methodist Club v. Hikutaia, wag played on the Hikutaia courts on Saturday, when the weather was bright and the sun very hot. The games were most enjoyable, the match being "any side" up to the last two sets, both of which went to the visitors. On both sides improved work with the racquet was verv noticeable, the Thames ladies making up for the less successful play of the men.
The usual felicitations were extended to the visitors by the president of the home club (Mr J. Elliot), who congratulated the players on the.excellent spirit that pervaded the match and the sportsmanlike manner in which the umpire’s decisions had boon received. That undue anxiety to’win games—which so often leads to semi-concealed rivalry—was conspicuously absent, the players making the’result of secondary importance to the game, so that, while each player did his or her best to win, all forgot the end in the enjoyment of the mean', to such end.
Mr Morton, in responding, spoke of the good time the Thames team had enjoyed, and-thanked the club for its open hospitality. He hoped that future games between the two clubs would enhance their respect and good will for each other, and make for improvement in the game that appealed so strongly to its devotees. He aske.l the members of the Thames team to equal in their cheers for Hikutaia that heartiness and spontaneity which characterised the cheers accorded to them.

The match resulted : Thames, 7 sets or 79 games; Hikutaia, 6 sets or 9J games. NETHBRTON B V. HIKUTAIA JB. A most pleasant tennis match tooi place al Netlierton uu Saturday, when the Hikutaia B team tried conclusions with the local B team. The games wore played in the best of spirits, aud some good tennis resulted. The visitors were handsomely treated, and the captain of the team, Mr L. Alexander, in replying to the hearty welcome, eulogised the lavish hospitality his team had experienced, as well as their individual and collective appreciation of the tennis played. He wished the Netherton club every success, and hoped that future matches would be numerous and played in the same " sporty ” manner.
