WAIHI BEACH ROAD.

EXPENSE OBJECTED TO. WORK IN ABEYANCE. Reporting on the progress being made with the Waihi Beach Road at the monthly meeting; of the Wailii Borough Council the foreman of works said : “Gregory has finished his contract and Ashby has made a good start on his. 1 have put down some metal at the Tauranga Road turn so as to be prepared for the wet weather, and 1 would suggest that 1 be allowed to put some metal at the foot of the first cutting past the cemetery to make that very bad place secure.” When this was read Cr. Butcher was quickly on his feet entering a vigorous protest against more metal going on the road. Top much money, he declared, had been spent on the road, and concluded : “It’s beach, beach all the time ; let us give it a spell.” The Mayor remarked that work on the road would have to be gone on witii if the beach scheme was to oe made a paying proposition. Cr. Hovell held the same view. Cr. Butcher was not in agreement, and reiterated that no more money should be spent on the road in the meantime.

Cr. Lockington was for deferring further expenditure until such time as the Council got some idea is to wliat assistance other local bodies interested were going to give.

Cr. Walmsley pointed out that the Obinetntiri County Council had been contributing a fixed amount in terms of an agreement entered into, and had not really been asked for an additional contribution.

Cr. Morgan : That statement is not quite correct.

Cr. Lockington repeated that all the other parties concerned should oe consulted and their contributions fixed before spending further money on the road.

Cr. Morgan then moved that the metalVng of the cutting mentioned in the foreman’s report be held in abeyance pending a consultation with the engineer for the Ohinemuri County Council, Mr E. Shaw. This was seconded and carried.
