PIPIROA WATER SUPPLY.

ENGINEER’S EX AMINATION. AMPLE GOOD WATER. • I Correspondence regarding the proposal to obtain a water supply for Piniroa was read at last week’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. Mr E. F. Adams wrote acknowledging receipt of the analysis of the water proposed to be used os a supply. He stated that the lowland water was very impure, but the upland water was be* ter, and with treatment woulft lie suitable for domestic supply. There was, therefore, np reason to delay proceeding with the undertaking. *There was abundant water in the upland stream for at least the area west jf the Piako River.

After conferring with Cr. Parfitt Mr Adams wrote stating that following the council’s instructions he had gauged the stream near the council’s boundary. It was not practicable to gauge the whole flow, but that recorded equalled 381,000 gallons per 24 honns. The available quantity was probably 500,000 gallons per 24 hours, and the requirements of the area from Waitakaruru to the head of the canal above Ngatea were estimated at 300,000 gallons. The area taken (17.600 acres) included much land which was unlikely to carry more than 30 head of cattle per 100 acres for many years to come, and would probably apply to one-third to one-quarter of the area named. The 300,000 gallons was estimated on a. basis of 30 gallons per beast per day.

Cr. Parfitt moved that Mr Adams be asked to inform the council what area should be reserved for a dam site, and what he proposed should be done with the area above the site. Seconded by Cr. Madgwlck and carried.
