BOWLING.

GOLDFIELDS STARS MATCH. WIN FOR WAIKINO. - Alter a strenuous battle against a superior team the Paeroa Club was once again unable to retain) the muchcoveteo Goldfields Stars on Saturday afternoon. The teams Were :—Waikino (challengers) : Cater, Collins, Johnson, and Vercoc (skip). Paeroa (holders) : Gi>>b, Le Cocq, Towers, and Williams (skip). Perfect weather prevailed, and th 3 green was up to its usual standai d. Jii the first head Paeroa scored three. From then onward Waikino more than held their own until the thirteenth head was reached, when Paeroa came to light with a four, the scores at this stage being 14—9 favour of Waikino. Williams, the local skip, played some good bowls, which only just failed in finding their mark owing to the snug manner in which the Waikino team smothered up the jack. Th* challengers continued to maintain their lead, scoring nearly every head unHl the 19th was reached, when Wi’liams saved a “hatful” by sending down two perfect bowls, ultimately laying one up. On the 20th head Gibb lead two good bowls, outpointing Cater. Le Cocq, too, on this head improved the position considerably for Paeroa, until Johnson sent down a good bowl and trailed the jack, leaving Waikino in a good position for th? skips to either make or mar the head. Williams’ first bowl was l short, and with his second he failed by a narrow margin, while his opponent played two good bowls which gave Waikim a further score of two, the total being Waikino 23. Paeroa 19. Excitement was keen at the last head, as it was still possible for Paeroa to win. Gibb made the most of his two bowls, but each time was displaced by Cater. With his first bowl Le Cocq drew' the shot, but Collins crept inside with his second bowl and trailed the jack, although his own bowl ran out of bounds The alteration made to the head, and two well" placed bowls sent down by Towers, made Paeroa’? chance of winning on the last head a good one. Williams was unfortunate with his first bowl, while Vercbe managed to place his well among the bead. The second howls of the skips made little alteration, and Paeroa. was able to claim four, thus leaving Waikino the winners by 23—19.

To further stimulate interest in bowling under electric light conditions the local club ’proposes to provide a number of challenge matches to be played at night. A sub-commit-tee has been set up to arrange details ami it has been suggested that challenge matches should be played between the Railway Department, Power Board, Public Works Deparcmmit, School Committee, and the various trades and industries of the town. Tt is thought that if such matches can be arranged it will give an impetus to night play, and create a competitive spirit, and also be an added ijidueement to other than members of the bowling club tp take part in the healthy game of bowls in the fresh air.
