COLLISION AT NGATEA.

SCOW HERO’S UNFORTUNATE TRIP The owners or tbe' scow Hero will have cause to remember this week’e trip of their vessel on the Piako River. Coming up on Wednesday morning she caused the high-voltage power cable to be damaged, and on returning the following morning collided with another veslsel, both susta’ning damage. It is a difficult feat to safely negotiate the narrow opening in the Ngatea bridge while being towed if there is a strong tide following, and one requiring co-operation between the masters of both vessels. It happened that while the Hero was passing through tlie bridge she came too close, with the result that part of rigging was broken, causing the topmast to fall. The impact also caused the vessel to so slew that she collided with a small steamer berthed at Johnstone’s wharf, breaking the rail around the stern. Had the captain of the steamer not seen the approaching danger and cast off the mooring ropes the damage would have been much greater.
