An unusual case was heard at Hamilton on Monday before Mr H. A. Young, S.M., when Irvine Arthur was charged with- failing to attach a 2d stamp t? a Public Works Department voucher for £5O. Senior-Sergeant Mathew stated that defendant had attached a l%d stamp to a vouheer, whereas he should have put on a 2d one. He was fined £2 and costs 7s.
Tlie Napier Mardi Gras is to be abandoned. At a public meeting the following motion was carried: “That in view of the general apathy of the business people of N,apier towards the M.irdi Gros, the refusal of the-retail-ers to grant the usual half-holiday on the second afternoon, and their action in closing their premises all day on January 2 for the Hastings races, it be a recommendation to the that the Mardi Gras he abandoned,”
