Prior to the census of 1921, the! nationality of Bfitish subjects alone j was the subject of detailed inquiry,; the general entry “foreign” being, considered sufficiejut in all other) ceases. In the figure® now published j by the Government statistician, the) nationality and: allegiance of those; not British subjects is the subject of; detailed information. Of 1,218,362 persons whose allegi-: ance was stated on the census schedules, l;210,4«l, or 99.35 per cent, of! the population, claimed British na-, tionality. Of the remaining 7901 persons, the largest nationality was Chinese, who numbered 2712, or 34.32) per cent, of - the alien population. The; United States comes second with 1013,: and l then follow Jugoslavs 857, Germans 521, Danes 480, Swedes 341,. Norwegians 301, French 264, Italians. 229, Swiss 219, Russians 197, Finns 166, Syrians 81, Poles 79, Greeks 75. Dutch 70. Belgians 60, Austrians 60, and others 171.
It is interesting to note that the, number of aliens has steadily decreased from 18,043 in 1881, to 7901 in; 1921, although the total population has increased by 1.49 per cent in the; same period. Male aliens outnumber! female aliens, the percentage being. 80 26 and 19.74, notwithstanding the.) fact, that many of the latter are British-born wives who became alien; upon marriage.
Ready four-fifths of the alien population reside ,in the North Island. TheSouth Islaipd figures are in paren-. th as is in the following comparisons: Chinese 75 58 (21.43), United States 70.38- (96.62), German 72.55 (27.45). Danish '85.62 (14.38), Swiss 95.43 (4 57). Russian 82.74 (7.26), Jugo-Slav 99 18 (0.82).
The poulation of foriegn nationalities .per 10,000 population in districts is as follows :—Aucland 97, Hawke’s Bay 74, Taranaki 57, Web lington 94, Westland 81, Marlborough 26, Nelson 33, Canterbury 28, Otago 37„ Southland 26. Southland and Marlboro,ugh have the highest British percentage, Wellington the lowest, with Auckland closely following. Many of the Westland aliens are remaining from’ the mining boom.
There are large numbers.of certain nationalities in certain districts, 773 out of 857 Jugo-Slavs residing in Auckland, while there are little Swiss Colonies'in Taranaki, and Danish in Wellington. ■ ■ ■ ■
