TURUA RATEPAYERS.

MONTHLY MEETING.

Che monthly meeting of the Tuiua Ratepayers’ and Citizens' League was hekl in the Turua Buildings on Friday last. Mr P. R. Henry presided over an attendance of nine members. In opening the meeting the chairman said that it had beejn called a few days earlier than usual .as a had been received from the Kerepeehi Ratepayers' Association and Citizen s Progressive League asking for a conference, which would also include the Netherton Ratepayers’ Association, on Monday, February 4, at 8 p.m. to discuss the business methods of County Council in general, and the machinery loan. As that was the date of the association’s regular meeting it was desirable that member? should have an opportunity of discussing the matter. Mr F. Truelove said that members .should attend the conference. Mr P. R. Henry intimated that he would go, but he would not be a party to any move condemning the council without hearing its side of the argument. Members should be present, and they could judge what action to take when the Kerepeehi and Netherton people had put forward their arguments, Mr Truelove moved, and Mr A. Sutton seconded, that the association be > represented at the conference. —Carried. Members expressed the opinion that the councillors and the county engineer should be present. It was not known if it was the intention of the Kerepeehi association to invite them. It was decided to leave, it open to members to attend. AN AMBULANCE. The secretary of the Thames Hospital Board wrote in reply to the association’s letter that application had been made to the Department of - Health for a supply of stretchers, and that as soon, as they came to hand one would be forwarded to Turua. TOTARA POINT CROSSING. The Thames County Council clerk replied to the association’s letter stating that there was no danger to the > travelling public in connection with the tram crossing, for the reason that a signalman was always stationed in the vicinity of the crossing during tha time the tram was crossing the road. A PUBLIC POUND. Mr W. Madgwick reported on the ac’ion of the Council in regard to the establishment of a public pound in Turua. It was the opinion of the Council that the system of prosecution would be less costly, loss trouble, and more effective. With this many members concurred, and it was deieded that the inspects should be asked to visit Turua frequently. SHIPPING FACILITIES. £ Mr F. Truelove brought up the matter of the inadequate shipping facilities. It frequently happened * that goods were left on the Auckland i wharf owing to the ship being full. -The shipping company had recently said that there was not enough cargo to warrant a steamer, but now there was sc. much cargo that part had to be left behind. Mr Henry suggested that the Northern Steamship Co. should be asked to send cargo shut out from the Turua boat bv the Paeroa boat. He pointed out that the Taniwha sometimes carried cargo to and from Turua. He moved in that direction. ’ . . Mr R. H. Baker seconded, and the motion was carried: Members expressed the opinion that the men on the boats were more to blame than the executive of the company. • TOWN BOARD ROADS. Mr Baker suggested that the Town Board should be asked to fill up the j holes in the road at the bridges and . culverts on the main read. DRAINS TN TOWN AREA. - Mr Truelove said that the drains in the Town Board area were breeding places for mosquitos, and he asked if something could not he done in the matter. » It was pointed out that this was a matter for the Health Department. . TELEPHONE FACILITIES. Mr Madgwick asked members if they had experienced any delay in getting telephone bureau communications. It was stated that during the day a long delay was usually experienced. Apparently the business had increased more rapidly than the facilities were provided. Duplication of many of the wires was required. ■ Mr Madgwick moved that the chief postmaster be asked if the TuruaThamcs line could no duplicated. Seconded by Mr W. Baker and carried.
