SILVERPINE POLES.
FREIGHTS TOO HIGH. Reference was made at a recent inneting of the Manawa,tu County to the suppliy of silver pine poles from the council’s mill in the King Country. Arrangements are in hand for the laying down of a light tramway in order to get the poles out, but the work is not yet completed. The county clerk reported that the OrouoManawatu Power Board was urgently requiring a supply of these poles, and it was necessary to expedite delivery. He also mentioned the fact that the, railway freight was a matter which was causing .some concern. The last load, which arrived in the county had cost' 15s each for railage, a considerable increase on the cost of the previous load. If such heavy fireights were going to be charged it would result in the local ■product being put off the market in favour of Australian ironbark poles. At the present time the matter was •being investigated, as the Forestry Department was particularly interested in the matter. Thfe clerk anticipated that a .satisfactory arrangement would be made with the Railway Department. The local product should certainly receive preference, and it would be unfair to force these poles off the market through excessive freight Whilst on the subject the Council confirmed the purchase of .a log hauler for use in getting out the silver pine logs, and also agreed to the lease of the loading siding at Pokako from the Railway Department.
