AN AMUSING CASE.
WOMAN’S REJUVENATION. There has been brought to light at Versailles a singular case of rejuvenation which has nothing to do with Dr. Voronoff or any other scientist. Ti e inestimable boon o£ youth was accidentally conferred upon a woman music hall artist four years ago by a municipal official, but the woman has now had to compensate for her tempo: ary rejuvenation by growing ten years older in a •night. For nearly four years the Mayor’s office at Garches, near Versailles, has received three or four times a year a request from a music-hall artist for a copy o f hei birth certificate. With each request for a duplicate .she enclosed a certificate issued by the same office four years since, so that the officials simply Ifad to make a- copy of it cn an official form. But these demands
became so regular that the Mayor’s t curiosity was aroused, and he search--1 ed the register of births for 1897, the date which appeared on the certificate. But he found no entry of the women in question, even after going through the records of two or three years. He therefore lodged a charge of forgery against her. Police inquiries, however, brought to light a very simple explanation. It appears that when the certificate was issued four years ago the clerk in the Mayor’s office had written in mistake 1897 instead of 1887 as the year. The music-hall artist to whom such rejuvenation was of material importance in applying for new contracts made the most of it, always taking >ca re to send this document when applying for copies of her birth recordThe Mayor, on learning the explanation of the affair, made full allowance for feminine frailty and promptly withdrew his charge, but he could not consent to the woman remaining
