monthly council meetinc. The regular meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr W Marshall) presiding over the following Crs. T. P. Vuglar, H. ML Shand, F. E. Flatt, G. P. Lamb, P. E. Brcnan, J. W. Silcock, and E. Edwards. An apology was received from Or. W, Bain. hTe town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander) also attended. OFFER OF A SCARIFIER. The Waitomo County Council wrote quoting a threc-tyne reversible M<>nsou scarifier for attachment to a -- roller for the sum of £5O. It was decided to cply that the borough was. not in need of a scarifier at present. STREET LIGHT. Mr E. W. Porritt wrote advising that the Power Board had now erected the pole line along Raroa Road, and stated that if the Council would instal a street light at the far end of the road he was prepared to pay the maintenance charge of £3 per annum for two years. The request was granted, subject to the Power Board installing a light under the same conditions as pertain to the other street lights. ROAD DRAIN. Mrs Rihitoto Mataia wrote witn reference to the drainage from the Old Te Aroha Road flood area to the river, a distance of approximately nine chains, and stated that if the Council was desirous of continuing to use the drain to take the water off a mutual arrangement could no doubt be made. ' Cr, Vuglar said that the only way . to satisfactorily'drain Te Aroha Road was through the old drain, which had been filled in. The Council decided that the matter could not be entertained unless the writer was prepared to discuss the question of reopening the old drain. WATER CONNECTIONS. E. Shaw sought permission to z lay a %in water pipe along Raroa , Road to E. W. Porritt’s property from Thames Road.—Granted. The' Paeroa Beautifying Society wrote enclosing £3 towards the cost of the stand pipes at the railway staytion and the removal of the bubble fountain to the water-table. Peter Barakat made application for a. watbr connection to his section in Thames Road, and enclosed the necessary fee.—Granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws. AORANGI ROAD. The fallowing letter was. received from Mr A. Cassrels, Paeroa, with reference to A rangi Road :— “If the Council is prepared to accept dedication of a road through my --- property on Thames Road to replace A iangi Road I am pleased to offer same for dedication, the new road to be constructed approximately as shown ■on plan. In return for this road I would expect, that portion-of Aorangi Road which can be closed owing to the dedication of this new one to be handed over to me, excepting those portions which would require to be handed over to propertyowners in order to give access- to their properties from the proposed new road. I refer to a piece which would have to be handed to G. Buchanan, and another piece which would require to be attached to a Native,block in order to give proper access. With regard to fencing of the proposed new road, this is a matter which I would expect the Council to do.’’ The offer was accepted, but the C .nncil would not be prepared to erect the fence’s. SEWERAGE CONNECTIONS. ' The following letter was received from the Paeroa manager for Francis Battson, plumber:— ‘According to' the ‘Hauraki Plains Gazette,’ a letter was forwarded to you containing very seriouis charges against our firm. The allegations are distinctly libelpus, and if any further statements like it are made steps will be taken to properly defend o-jr reputation. The purpose of this letter is to again intimate to you that if persons think that they have •irlmon overcharged for-sewerage and sanitary plumbing work we are prepared to place all figures and details as tot cost before the Mayor, and if on receiving his report the Council is <> r the opinion that we have overv charged we will donate the sum of J'.IO to any fund nominated by the Council.” Jr. Flatt said that there appeared to be an undercurrent of feeling among a certain section of the people, and he suggested that the firm should be asked .to submit its estimates to the Council. He thought that if this was done the ratepayers would have the satisfaction of knowing that their interests vere being -'protected. The Mayor said that competitive prices could always be obtained by ratepayers. ATe Aroha firm had already carried out work in the town. ANZAC AVENUE. | Cr. Brenan moved that the street L now known as Anzac Avenue should T be named Taylor’s Avenue, in recognition of the splendid and loyal services tendered to the town by Mr W. H. Taylor, who had been instrumental in the first place in having the avenue put through. The resolution was seconded by Cr. Flatt and supported by the Mayor. It was decided to erect a board bearing the name of Taylor’s Avenue. REPAIRS TO ROADS. Cr. Edwards asked that a few loads of gravel should be placed hi Wood Street at the south-eastern end. Cr. Vuglar asked that the Council should attend to both approaches to the Criterion bridge, as the work was urgent. Both matters were referred to tut w o>-ks committee, with power to act. ROAD SEWERAGE PIPESIt was decided to Increase the size of the pipes in Station Road froan 6in. to'flin in view of the extra work that will be thrown on tp the sewer.
