QUESTION OF COST.

DISCUSSION BY TOWN BOARD.

Matters in connection with the proposal to erect a towu hall in Turua were discussed at the last meeting of the Turua Tow.i Beard.

The clerk reported o. the leceut postal ballot to decide wnuther shops should be included. Foity-three papers had been issued and 37 returned. Twenty-eight votes had been recorded for the shops and nine against.

The chairman said that in the opinion of many ratepayers the loau proposal would down if the amount was in excess of £3OOO. Members pointed out .that the estimate of £3600 had been published on the voting paper for the shop Question, and the ratepayers had agreed tp the more expensive building.., Mr A. P. Gardiner moved that the County Council be approached ani asked to raise a loan of £3600 for the purpose of erecting a hall with two

lock-up shops, in accordance with the estimates of the architect, the sum of £3600 to include the cost of raising the loan and the first year’s interest and sinking fund. Mr J. F. Davies seconded.

Mr F. Olsen moved as an amendment that the amount of the loan be J £3090, exclusive of the cost of rats- “ ing the loan and the charges. Speaking to his motion, he contended that the hall should be made smaller, so that it would coist less. Several economies could be effected, such as doing without the lining of the various dressing rooms, etc. Mr C Scott seconded pro forma. On the amendment being put to the meeting it was carried, Messrs Scott, Olsen, Beck, and Mules voting for it. Mr Davies asked what should now be done. The chairman said that the plans should be sent back to the architect for revision. k.
