DISTRICT NEWS

TURUA.

TELEPHONE EXTENSIONS. The telephone line construction gang is now stationed at Turua, where about 20 new subscribers are waiting to be connected up. An extension of the hours in whicn the exchange is open could be had for the asking. TOWN HALL QUESTION. Little interest i.s being taken in the postal ballot on the question as to whether there should be shops or not in the proposed to.wn hall at Turua. So far only a little more than half the ballot papers have been returned. The count will be made at the next meeting of the Town Board. BUSINESS ENTERPRISE. Some months ago the Turua Ratepayers' and Citizens’ Progressive Association moved in the matter of having a dentist and a hairdresser establish businesses in the township. A dentist was quick to grasp the opportunity of extending his practice, and last week a hairdressing establishment was opened. NGATEA. TENNIS CLUB. Owing to the lack of interest taken by last year’s members the Nga.ea Tennis Club has made little progress this season. New arrivals in the district, together with a few old supporters, have for some time been endeavouring to stimulate interest. An effort is being made to purchase a section of land from the Government. The committee appointed to deal with the matter will report to a general meeting on Saturday next, when it is hoped there will be sufficient intending members present to put the club on an active footing.

Supporters of tennis have recently chioped the turf from the school court and covered it with shell. It is proposed—the school committee being willing—to expend what funds the club has in the purchase of tar to seal this court. Should this be approved of by the club, and sufficient new members enrolled to justify the expenditure, the work could be done by voluntary labour and a good little court made.
